Responsibilities

The City is seeking an Environmental Scientist dedicated to ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and safeguarding our precious water resources. This role focuses on leading environmental programs, particularly in stormwater management and NPDES permit compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Environmental Compliance: Inspect and identify existing and potential pollution sources, ensuring adherence to environmental regulations.
  • Emergency Response: Respond to environmental emergencies effectively and efficiently.
  • Inspections/Investigations: Conduct thorough inspections/investigations to assess potential environmental impacts and recommend abatement measures in response to community complaints from citizens, industries and businesses.
  • Field Work: Perform fieldwork, including collecting water quality samples and monitoring water levels in both surface water and groundwater.
  • Community Engagement: Lead educational outreach efforts to raise awareness and promote water resource protection within the community.
  • Source Water Protection Program: Assist in planning, implementing and coordinating the Source Water Protection Program (SWPP), collaborating with businesses within the Source Water Protection Area (SWPA).

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Water Resources Management, Geology, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Science or equivalent discipline.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge And/or Familiarity

  • Experience in Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) regulatory requirements and Ohio EPA National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) stormwater permits.
  • General understanding of 40 CFR Universal Waste regulations & Hazardous Waste regulations.
  • Knowledge of water quality sampling and analysis.
  • Experience with community education and outreach.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • Communication and interpersonal abilities.

Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver's license, at time of appointment, and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Special Requirements

Within 6 months of appointment must obtain and maintain, as a condition of continued employment, a Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification.

Background Check

A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position.

Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
