This position provides excellent customer service and helps create a welcoming library environment; prepares and implements library programming, selects and evaluates materials for specific subject areas as assigned, maintains a knowledge of current practices in youth services and programming, actively participates in community outreach, acts as person in charge of buildings as needed, and performs various other duties as assigned.

This position may require scheduling at any library facility as well as off-site locations during days, nights, and weekends.

We offer a comprehensive benefit package. The cost for a family plan for medical, dental, vision and prescription is only $98.61 per month for 2025 and starts on first day of employment.

Starting Pay: $28.70/hr After 6 Months: $29.41/hr

Examples Of Duties

  • Creates a welcoming environment by providing excellent customer service and maintaining the appearance of public areas.
  • Demonstrates commitment to The Library’s mission and vision by actively promoting services and resources.
  • Communicates effectively with colleagues, patrons, stakeholders, and the community by responding to queries in a timely manner.
  • Prepares and implements library programming for all ages and diverse backgrounds based on the needs of the community.
  • Develops partnerships and relationships with City departments and other organizations.
  • Assists with outreach in the community.
  • Creates displays of library materials that aligns with programming and community interests.
  • Assists patrons with technology and self-service options, including computers and printers.
  • Assists with patron accounts and provides access to library materials.
  • Evaluates patron needs and develops the tools and services to meet those needs.
  • Provides reference services and researches patron information requests and uses standard library resources to provide answers.
  • Works collaboratively with marketing for programming efforts.
  • Serves as a selector of library materials to develop and maintain specified areas of the collection.
  • Performs readers’ advisory services.
  • Uses software such as Beanstack to enter program registrations and logs.
  • Meet patrons at their point of need by working a service point and routinely roving public areas.

Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited college or university; professional experience in the areas of services to children and teens, programming, and materials selection preferred; coursework and interest in children/teen literature, and knowledge of public libraries preferred. Certification with the State Library of Iowa required upon employment and retained throughout employment.

  • Demonstrated skills in customer service and the ability to effectively problem solve.
  • Proficiency in basic computer, software, and technology tools.
  • Ability to perform, organize, and prioritize work independently.
  • Ability to create innovative programming and service concepts.
  • Knowledge of development and youth library programs, services, techniques, principles, and trends.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations, children, and large groups.
