Transit Driver II (Part-time)

Transport passengers in a safe manner on the city buses; pick up/drop off the passengers at the desired stops; count passenger numbers, tokens and money; fill out passenger trip sheets; and inform passengers of bus stop options and schedule information.
 
The essential functions of the job are not limited to those listed in the job description.  The City retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.
  • Operates the bus by following fixed routes or trip manifest; completing accurate trip counts; complying with drivers’ operating policies and procedures; focusing on passenger needs and satisfaction; communicating with other bus drivers; maintaining a professional and courteous attitude towards other passengers and drivers; and observing safe driving practices.
  • Receives and manages fares by selling tokens for passenger use; organizing and handling money; and ensuring safe deposit of money into designated fare box.
  • Oversees lifts and customer service by assisting patrons onto the bus; completing pre-trip inspections; manually or automatically operating the lift as needed; helping passengers with directions; and informing passengers of stops and bus route.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES
  • Checks the oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, oil, and coolant.
  • Tracks fluids and gas used per trip.
  • Checks wheel chair lift for functionality.
  • Attends meetings and training sessions.
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as assigned.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent in level of knowledge, with ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operations of machines, and over one year up to and including two years of experience.
 
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above

Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (with ‘P’ Endorsement) and acceptable driving record according to City criteria required within six weeks of employment
  • Defensive driving course
  • DOT medical examiner certificate

Job Knowledge   
Basic familiarity with the work to know common principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.

Reading  
Basic:  Ability to recognize meaning of common two- or three-syllable words.

Writing   
Basic:  Ability to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.

Math   
Basic:  Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).

Communication Skills  
Requires providing basic information to others outside direct reporting relationships on procedures or general policies. Contacts may require the consideration of different points of view to reach understanding and gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.

Independence and Decision-Making    
Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization.

  • Medium physical effort, exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10 lbs. constantly.
  • Constant sitting, pushing/pulling, handling; vision, hearing, talking to use computer, telephone and communicate effectively with others, and to maintain operational awareness of surroundings.
  • Frequent lifting, reaching, twisting.
  • Occasional standing, carrying, fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, bending, climbing.
  • Rarely walking, crawling, balancing.

NON-PHYSICAL DEMANDS 
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resources, including work time. 
  • Regular and predictable attendance is expected.
  • Frequently experiences time pressure, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, noisy/distracting environment.
  • May rarely experience emergency situations, irregular work schedule/overtime, tedious or exacting work.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE
Typically requires use of standard office equipment and telephone/radio, and related software and hardware; and any other tools and equipment as appropriate or as assigned, such as wheelchair lift, fare box.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This work is performed in a vehicle environment, where there may be respiratory hazards, extreme temperatures, noise and vibration, and physical hazards daily; exposure to wetness/humidity seasonally; frequent mechanical hazards, exposure to communicable diseases, physical danger or abuse; occasional chemical or electrical hazards; and rare fire hazards, exposure to explosives.

The employee must wear appropriate protective equipment for the assigned task (hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe shoes, etc.), and any other equipment as apparent or assigned, if any.
