The City of Dana Point is seeking a reliable and hardworking individual to join our Parks Team as a Maintenance Worker I or II. This position is responsible for performing a variety of maintenance, repair, and other tasks at City-owned parks and facilities. The ideal candidate takes pride in their work, is safety-conscious, and enjoys working both independently and as part of a team to help maintain clean, safe, and functional public spaces.

The position will be filled at either the Maintenance Worker I or II level, depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Maintenance Worker I: $55,140.00 - $78,240.00 Annually
Maintenance Worker II: $61,272.00 - $86,928.00 Annually

DEFINITION

Under direct or general supervision, perform a variety of semi-skilled work in the construction, modification, maintenance, and repair of City infrastructure, including parks, facilities and buildings, sports fields, open spaces, recreation trails, landscapes, playgrounds and equipment, and irrigation systems and controllers; provides assistance with set-up and removal of equipment and facilities at special events; operate maintenance and construction tools and equipment; and perform other related duties as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS 

Maintenance Worker I:
This is the entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic maintenance experience learn City infrastructure, systems, and facilities, use of tools and equipment, and a wide variety of practices and procedures. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods.

Maintenance Worker II:
This is the full journey-level class within the Maintenance Worker series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I by having at least one year of related work-experience and on-the-job training. Maintenance Worker II requires less supervision and performs a broader range of duties.


This is a Non-Exempt position under FLSA standards.

Maintenance Worker I and II:

  1. Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and construction tasks in both shop and field environments in the alteration, repair, and maintenance of parks, equipment, buildings, and structures.
  2. Remove and install signs; remove non-hazardous spills and debris; service trash bins, pressure wash sidewalks.
  3. Troubleshoot maintenance problems involving electrical, structural, plumbing, and equipment repair or replacement.
  4.  Perform regular parks and facilities inspections for preventative maintenance.
  5. Provides assistance with the set-up and removal of equipment and facilities at special events.
  6. Operate, maintain, and repair a variety of tools and equipment used in parks and facilities maintenance; lift, carry, and wheel heavy materials and/or objects.
  7. Perform and observe safe work methods, policies, and procedures and make appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
  8. Use proper protective equipment in the course of the job, including steel-toed boots, eye protection, hearing protection and gloves.
  9. Drive City vehicles between various work sites; maintain vehicles, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition and ensure equipment is secure at the close of the workday.
  10. Utilize a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to create and update work orders and analyze maintenance data effectively.
  11. Provide courteous customer service; respond to questions and inquiries from the general public regarding various maintenance projects; resolve customer problems or complaints.
  12. Read, understand, and interpret written instructions, plans, blueprints, specifications, and schematics.
  13. Respond to emergency calls for service on a call-out basis, working outside normal working hours if necessary.
  14. Perform other related duties as assigned.

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Maintenance Worker I:

Knowledge of:

  • Methods and techniques of general maintenance, repair, and construction related to the area of work assigned.
  • Operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned. 
  • Safety procedures and practices for maintenance and repair activities.
  • Basic concepts of the skilled trade areas, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning and ventilation.
  • Basic concepts, methods, and techniques pertaining to the construction, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of indoor and outdoor facilities.
  • Basic concepts of landscaping, field maintenance, arboriculture, irrigation inspection and repair.
  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications.
  • Principles and practices of record keeping.
  • Safe driving principles and practices.



ABILITY TO:
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual tasks requiring coordination and physical strength.
  • Perform painting, plumbing, and electrical repairs.
  • Safely lift, carry and maneuver items, materials, and/or equipment up to 60 lbs. in weight. 
  • Safely operate a variety of hand and power tools and light motorized equipment.
  • Maintain equipment and work supplies in a safe and functional manner. 
  • Maintain a safe work environment and follow safety and policy procedures.
  • Learn to perform higher level facilities maintenance skilled craft areas, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning and ventilation.
  • Read maps, blueprints, and diagrams.
  • Operate office equipment including computers and supporting software applications.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Maintenance Worker II:
In addition to the qualification for Maintenance Worker I:
Knowledge of:
  • Use and operation of maintenance and repair equipment such as electric and gas-powered equipment and hand tools.
  • Use of power equipment and body mechanics related to lifting and moving heavy or awkward objects.
  • Properties of safe handling techniques of oils, paints and a variety of other materials used in the maintenance and repair activities.
  • General electrical and plumbing maintenance and installation. Basic report writing.
Ability to:
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Maintenance Worker I:

Education and Experience:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Graduation from high school or completion of a GED and/or specialized vocational training program courses in maintenance fundamentals and/or other related maintenance course work and six months of increasingly responsible experience related to maintenance and repair is desirable.

License or Certificates:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.

Maintenance Worker II:
Education and Experience
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
  • Graduation from high school or completion of a GED and/or specialized vocational training program courses in maintenance fundamentals and/or other related maintenance course work and one year of increasingly responsible experience related to maintenance and repair.

License or Certificates:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.

Physical Requirements: Position requires the ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time which include heavy lifting and carrying; and occasional bending, squatting, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing and twisting. Continuous hand use and finger dexterity are needed to operate standard office equipment, hand tools, equipment and machinery. Frequent use of hand and foot controls for driving. The position requires acute vision and hearing, in addition to a normal sense of smell, in order to detect the possible presence of waste or hazardous materials. Normal duties involve frequent walking and standing at work sites to identify problems or hazards.

Work Environment: Primarily field environment which involves travel from site to site. Incumbent may be exposed to loud noise levels, extremes in temperature or humidity, dust, fumes, vibration, uneven surfaces, vehicle & moving equipment traffic and other elements. Requires working at heights for specific assignments and operation of motorized vehicles, equipment and machinery.

Note: All employees of the City of Dana Point are designated by both State law and City ordinance to be “Disaster Service Workers.” In the event of a declared emergency or an undeclared emergency or natural disaster that threatens the life, health and/or safety of the public, employees may be assigned to assist rescue and relief workers. Such assignments may be in locations, during hours and performing work significantly different from the employees’ normal work assignments and may continue through the recovery phase of the emergency.
