The City of Dallas operates under a Council-Manager form of government, with a Mayor and 14 City Council Members serving as district representatives. Dallas has an FY 2024-25 operating budget of over $4 billion and a capital budget of over $912 million, totaling more than $4.9 billion. The city currently employs approximately 13,000 full-time staff.


Dallas Public Library (DPL)’s mission is to strengthen communities by connecting people, inspiring curiosity, and advancing lives. Today, DPL provides access to services, technology, and resources citywide through its 30 facilities, outreach programs, and partnerships. Its reach and reputation extend well beyond the city limits, as it is one of the largest urban libraries in the nation and is widely recognized for its creativity, innovation, and dedication to responsive service and positive impact.


In early 2023, the City of Dallas initiated a process to develop a comprehensive plan for DPL’s future. Objectives included a strategic plan to guide library services and operations for three to five years, as well as a 20-year plan for capital investments in library facilities. The city and DPL committed to a robust engagement process to ensure that the strategic and facilities plans align with the unique vision and values of Dallas communities.


With the support of library advocates, the public passed a $43.5 million bond proposition for ADA improvements, renovations of existing branches, and the construction of replacement buildings. The next Library Director will play a critical role in implementing these projects while maintaining public trust in the library system. The Library Director oversees all library facilities within the City, ensuring that communities across the city receive high-quality library services.


Candidate Qualifications:

  1. Master of Library Science from an American Library Association-accredited institution.
  2. At least 10 years of experience in library management and administration, customer service, programming development, or other relevant work in a similarly sized library system.


Candidates must demonstrate the ability to manage multiple library branches, lead interdisciplinary teams, and effectively solve problems. Experience in managing library construction and/or renovation projects is highly preferred.


The current salary range for this position is $125,855 to $188,782. The salary listed on this job posting is the entire salary range; amount offered will depend on qualifications.
