The City provides a full range of municipal services including Fire, Police, Housing and Human Services, Planning and Development, Public Works, Parks, Recreation, and Community Services, and Transportation.

THE DEPARTMENT:
The
Police Department has a complement of just over 100 sworn and 48 civilian personnel serving a residential population of 40,000 and an estimated daily commercial population of over 200,000

THE POSITION

Animal Services Officer
(Full-Time, Benefited)


This civilian position will be responsible for working collaboratively with the County of Los Angeles in enforcing animal care and control within Culver City limits.

GENERAL DUTIES:
  • Investigating complaints.
  • Picking up stray and unlicensed animals.
  • Examining animal licenses for validity.
  • Issuing delinquent notices and citations.
  • Canvassing to ensure animals are properly licensed.
  • Transporting animals to the local animal shelter.
  • Feeding and caring for sheltered animals.
  • Maintaining the kennels.
Note: Work schedule may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
  • High school graduation or equivalent AND;
  • One year of full-time paid experience performing animal care or control and working with the public and within two (2) years of hire successfully complete one of the following: 30 semester units of college-level course work in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Zoology or a related field; or 80 hours course work at the State Humane Association's Animal Control Officer Training Academy.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license. May be required to obtain a Penal Code 832 Arrest and Firearms certificate may be required within six (6) months of hire.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURES

Applicants must receive a passing score on all examination components to be placed on the eligible list. The most qualified candidates will be invited to advance to the next stage of the recruitment process.

Examination Components
  • Written Test: (weighted at 50%) To measure reading comprehension and reasoning ability (Tentatively scheduled for the Week of August 24, 2026).
  • Oral Appraisal Interview: (weighted at 50%) To evaluate training, experience, and personal qualifications (Tentatively scheduled for the Week of September 14, 2026).
Background Process (Qualifying): Background Investigation & Polygraph: To determine suitability for the position of Animal Services Officer. Psychological Screening & Medical Evaluation: Standard exams to determine suitability for the position of Animal Services Officer
