What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recreation Associate (part time) position at City of Crystal?
This is a part-time position which works up to 19 hours/week, primarily on evening and weekend hours. This position serves as a first point of contact for guests and provide excellent customer service by acknowledging visitors and providing information in a positive manner. Oversee the community center, Forest School, park rental facilities or other amenities. Maintain a safe and orderly facility while enforcing necessary regulations. Provide clean and safe facilities, accurate room set-ups and positive interaction with clients.
Decision Making: Must have knowledge of park and recreation programs, operations, and procedures. Must act in a decisive manner, using good judgment. Must be able to assess problems and situations, able to anticipate needs and evaluate alternatives.

Technical Knowledge: Must be able to handle working with the telephone, adjusting heating, cooling and lighting within the building, and locking and unlocking assigned facility. Must acquire working knowledge of the copy machine and office procedures. Must have a high school degree or equivalent.
Physical Abilities: Must be able to effectively communicate with the public in person and over the telephone. Must be able to move about freely throughout the facility to set up for meetings and events. This includes lifting tables or volleyball standards into the appropriate position, setting up chairs, and setting up various other pieces of recreational equipment in different work areas. Ability to lift 50 lbs. from knee level to waist high. Must be able to handle objects, to grasp, turn, or otherwise using hands or hand.
Working Conditions: Most shifts are located inside the community center or Forest School, and may occasionally work on the exterior of the facility to inspect or care for the property as needed. Some shifts will primarily serve guests at park shelters; which are outside and exposed to a variety of weather conditions that would also require driving to the site.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This work frequently requires the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting and occasionally requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
- Is knowledgeable about park and recreation program and facility offerings; and provides appropriate information to the public.
- Assures the facility or program area is clean and set-up properly prior to guest arrival; and corrects problems if necessary.
- Anticipates and responds to customer service issues, resolves guest needs in a professional manner.
- Oversees all assigned areas, often independently, to maintain an organized, clean and safe facility.
- Responsible for set up and take down of specific program equipment, AV equipment, tables and chairs, athletic equipment, etc. Monitors equipment and supplies to make sure they are in working order.
- Informs and enforces rules and regulations.
- Reports suspicious or aggressive activity to the police department.
- Responds to emergencies and reports accidents.
- Writes official reports as needed.
- Records incidents and events in daily notebook to communicate with supervisor and colleagues.
- Makes and places signs to aid guests in finding their room or shelter.
- Assists building custodian as needed.
- Performs clean-up and simple facility maintenance as needed; particularly in absence of custodian.
- Uses appropriate cleaning equipment and chemicals as necessary.
- Communicates with building custodian or park maintenance on areas needing clean-up and repair.
- Responsible for opening/closing the building and operating the security system.
- Facilitates fire and tornado emergency procedures.
- Attends staff meetings and coordinates work schedule with other staff.
- Ensures a safe and healthy work environment and conducts business in a safe manner.
- Performs miscellaneous clerical work like photocopying, filling brochure racks, preparing mailings, and other similar duties as assigned.
- Assists with program registrations as needed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High school degree or equivalent.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and in accordance with the physical requirements of the position.
- Valid Minnesota Driver's License.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Six months previous recreation facility operation experience.
- Six months previous customer service experience
- CPR and first aid certification.
