The Position
The Public Works Operator (Water) supports safe, reliable municipal water service by completing semi-skilled public works work tied to construction, maintenance, and repair activities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assist with installation and repair of water/sewer lines and related public works infrastructure
- Operate and care for hand construction tools and equipment as assigned
- Learn to run single-axle trucks and equipment such as an air compressor, boring machine, tapping machine, and backhoe
- Respond to emergency call-outs when needed
Required qualifications/skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Good physical condition and ability to perform manual labor for extended periods
- Valid Colorado driver’s license; obtain CDL within three months
- Availability for on-call emergency response

A Typical Shift
You’ll start the morning at the shop, check in with your crew, and head out to worksites around Cortez. Between tasks, you’ll keep tools organized, communicate progress by radio or in person, and wrap up with cleanup and preparation for the next day. Some weeks include being on call, where you may return after hours to help restore service during an urgent situation.
