Under general supervision, the purpose of this position is to provide administrative and technical support for the Crime Scene Unit and the Unit Manager. The Crime Lab Technician is responsible for preparing reports such as monthly statistics, meeting minutes, assisting in the preparation and maintaining of the annual budget, preparing the schedule for the 12-member Unit, data entry and responding to media requests. The Crime Lab Technician is responsible for processing and photographing evidence submitted by the Patrol Unit for latent fingerprints and DNA. The position also requires latent fingerprint examinations and verifications.

  • Provides administrative assistance to the Crime Scene and Evidence Unit Manager, preparing monthly, quarterly and yearly reports.
  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of the annual budget.
  • Creating and maintaining the yearly schedule for the 12-member Unit.
  • Preparing monthly meeting minutes, and data entry.
  • Ordering and maintaining equipment, chemicals, and supplies for the Crime Scene and Evidence Unit.
  • Maintains the digital management system, including case management and use rights.
  • Supports department members in the use of the digital evidence management system.
  • Processes evidence for latent fingerprints utilizing various powders, chemicals and specialized equipment.
  • Conducts latent fingerprint examination and verifications.
  • Processes external and internal media requests (audio, video and photo) for distribution to the State Attorney’s Office, private attorneys, law enforcement personnel and media networks.
  • Performs forensic video analysis, processes CD’s, DVD, VHS and USB drives containing surveillance video.
  • Manages the Children’s Safety and Identification Program, including scheduling, data entry, fingerprinting and photographing kindergarten students.

Bachelor's Degree in related job field. Experience in a police/investigations administrative support capacity; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office or meeting and training rooms, e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire and building safety regulations, and traffic signals when driving. The position requires the safe handling of firearms and narcotics.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of pre-established departmental, State and Federal policies, procedures and regulatory requirements applicable to the work; knowledge of current laws governing evidence/property handling of items involved in criminal investigations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform highly responsible work while maintaining integrity and security of police evidence.
  • Ability to read, update and maintain various records and files.
  • Ability to access, operate and maintain various software applications.
  • Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate specialized crime scene investigation technical equipment as well as basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.
  • Ability to operate basic photography equipment.

  • This is a designated "Recovery" classification in the City's Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies. Completion of appropriate level of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training is mandatory within one year of employment.

Physical Requirements

The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
