WORK HOURS: Monday-Friday; 7am-4pm
JOB SUMMARY:
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work is performed in installing meters and new lines and making repairs to existing water lines throughout the water system.
Examples of work performed: Repairs and clamps water leaks; operates various equipment such as boom, dump, water and service trucks and backhoe. Operates a horizontal earth boring machine to drill through earth for installation of pipelines under roads; taps and drills holes in water main to introduce service into customer establishment and sets meter housings; sets and maintains hydrants; performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in construction and maintenance of water systems
Knowledge of state and city traffic regulations
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions Geographic knowledge of the City
Ability to operate assigned equipment
Ability to investigate and find leaks in the water system
Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time under unfavorable climatic conditions
Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High school education or equivalent is required. Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license and possess, or be able to obtain, a Commercial driver's license within six (6) months of employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in water line construction or maintenance preferred. Experience operating backhoes, trenchers, or other heavy equipment used in water system maintenance.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Physical:
Requires frequent walking, digging, lifting, and carrying. Must be able to lift and transport items weighing up to 100 pounds. Involves working in deep ditches and performing manual labor for extended periods. Requires the ability to operate heavy machinery and tools, including tapping pressurized water mains.
Environmental:
Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow. Frequent exposure to dirt, mud, and high noise levels. Hazards include operating equipment, working in moving traffic, and potential exposure to electrical shock from defective household wiring near water meters.
