The City of Converse is seeking an Equipment Operator for the Public Works Streets Division. This position performs skilled and semi skilled work in street maintenance, road repair, brush and bulk collection, debris removal, and general public works operations. The Equipment Operator operates and maintains equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, rollers, backhoes, maintainers, and related tools and equipment.
This position may serve in a lead capacity in the absence of the Street Crew Leader and may be required to assist with emergency management, severe weather response, disaster response, and other City operations outside normal working hours.
Essential Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Operates equipment used in street repair and maintenance, including dump truck, loader, roller, maintainer, backhoe, and related equipment.
- Patches potholes, repairs streets, removes debris, collects brush and bulk items, and assists with maintenance of public facilities and rights of way.
- Performs daily equipment inspections, including fluids, fuel, steering, tires, hydraulic systems, safety features, and general operating condition.
- Performs routine service and minor repairs on equipment.
- Follows safety rules, uses required personal protective equipment, and maintains safe work zones.
- Communicates with supervisors, coworkers, other departments, and the public in a professional manner.
- Follows City and departmental policies, procedures, and supervisory instructions.
- Works cooperatively as part of a team and maintains effective working relationships.
- Reports equipment issues, safety hazards, citizen concerns, and work related issues through the proper chain of command.
- Responds to after hours, standby, emergency, and severe weather assignments as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Two years of progressively responsible experience in street maintenance, road repair, construction, heavy equipment operation, public works, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Valid Texas driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to safely operate or learn to operate assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather, traffic conditions, dust, fumes, noise, and other public works conditions.
- Ability to work overtime, standby, on call assignments, and emergency response assignments as required.
- Ability to pass required pre employment screening, including background check, driving record review, drug screen if applicable, and post offer physical or functional assessment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Texas Class B CDL or higher, or ability to obtain within a specified period after hire.
- Experience operating dump trucks, loaders, rollers, backhoes, maintainers, or similar equipment.
- Work zone traffic control or flagger training.
- Experience with asphalt, concrete, drainage, brush, bulk collection, or right of way maintenance.
- Prior lead worker or acting supervisor experience.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
This position requires outdoor work in heat, cold, rain, dust, noise, fumes, and traffic conditions. Duties may require sitting for extended periods while operating equipment; walking, standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing, and working on uneven surfaces. The position may require lifting and moving heavy objects, using hand and power tools, wearing personal protective equipment, and responding during emergencies.
