Under direct supervision, the Maintenance Worker Trainee receives on-the-job training and work assignments which are designed to develop skill and knowledge of manual tasks and the operation of standard small equipment used in construction and maintenance services.
Works under the general supervision of the Street Maintenance Supervisor or other management personnel; does not exercise supervisory responsibility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is an entry level training position for unskilled and limited or semi-skilled manual workers who perform a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair tasks in the public works or parks field operations and performs other related work as required. Assignments may rotate among the following functional areas: Street, Park and Sewer Maintenance.

Eligibility Requirements: To be considered for the Maintenance Worker Trainee Program/Clean Team, applicants must meet ALL of the following criteria:

Candidates will be reviewed and evaluated for consideration on a first-come, first-served basis. Those appearing to have the strongest qualifications and meeting the eligibility requirements for the position will be invited to participate in the interview process.
Important Information: Maintenance Worker Trainee positions are available as part of the City's Clean Team Program. This Program provides an opportunity for hourly trainees to learn job skills and gain work experience in one or more assignments. These are “at will” employment opportunities with the City of Compton and may be ended at any time at the discretion of the appointing authority. This is a temporary training position with a fixed schedule of 32 hours per week, Tuesday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The program runs for up to six (6) to eight (8) months and is limited to a maximum employment period of 975 hours. Continued participation is based on satisfactory performance and attendance. Participation in, or completion of, the program does not guarantee permanent employment with the City of Compton. The provisions of this program do not constitute an expressed or implied contract, and any provision may be modified or revoked without notice.

- Perform heavy manual labor, safely use tools and operate power equipment.
- Employ applicable safety procedures against hazards to protect city property and public safety.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Knowledge Of
- Basic operations, materials, equipment and tools used in street maintenance.
- Handle tools and operate equipment.
- Learn and perform general construction, and the basic maintenance and repair of tools.

- Understand and carry out oral written directions.
- Work as a responsible team member and maintain cooperative relationships with all persons contacted during the course of work performance.
- Ability to stand, walk, on uneven terrain for extended periods; crouch, stoop, twist, climb and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Work while exposed to cold, heat, noise, weather elements, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, infectious materials, hazardous gas, mechanical hazards and electrical hazards.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor requiring physical strength and dexterity under extreme weather conditions, and over extended periods.
- Meet the physical and health status requirements for this work category as outlined in the City’s Medical Standards for Applicants and Employees.
- Availability for shift work, on-call and stand-by duty.
- Complete annual training specified for this classification.
