Part-time Position
Must be available to work flexible hours and days
(Monday - Friday; not to exceed 28 hours per week)
Deputy Sheriff (Part-time): Provides courthouse security, transports prisoners, performs civil process service and other duties as assigned for the Sheriff's Office.
Examples of Duties
- Provides courtroom and facility security.
- Monitors courts in session
- Escorts prisoners to and from holding area and courtrooms
- Receives and screens the public seeking admittance into Courthouse.
- Performs security checks within Courthouse and responds to Courthouse incidents.
- Assists in the transportation of prisoners, mental patients for confinement, and other individuals in custody.
- Civil Process service, serves legal papers, executes criminal warrants issued by the Court, and schedules Court ordered evictions.
- Addresses public inquiries.
Education & Experience
- Possess a High School diploma or equivalent with at least three years of work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Possess a valid Virginia driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
- No felony convictions or serious misdemeanors.
- Must successfully pass a background investigation and pre-employment physical examination/testing.
- Must successfully pass an oral interview panel process.
- Possess basic computer knowledge and skills required, as all assignments include writing reports and documenting tasks and incidents.
- Must be able to communicate effectively, solve problems, write concise reports, maintain good physical conditioning, and be able to act quickly and calmly as part of a team under potentially stressful conditions.
- Must successfully complete a mandated full-time Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) training academy, followed by Colonial Heights Sheriff's Office training.
- Applicants with current Virginia jailer and/or law enforcement certifications desirable.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as prolonged standing, frequent climbing, lifting of objects weighing in excess of 74 pounds, moving in areas of difficult or dangerous access.
The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions. The nature of the work involves an element of danger and requires physical exertion and the ability to make decisions under stress. Work is performed according to policies and procedures and involves potential for personal danger.
