The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting of objects weighing in excess of 74 pounds, moving in areas of difficult or dangerous access.
The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions.

Applicants who possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement or higher level will be hired as Public Works Technician II.
- Public Works Technician I: Salary: $35,360
- Public Works Technician II (possess a Class B Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement or higher level): Salary: $37,440
- NOTE: The City of Colonial Heights will provide employees with the opportunity to obtain their CDL (Class B with Air Brake Endorsement), to include course enrollment, on the job training, and final DMV test.
- Employees who obtain this licensure will be eligible for a promotion to Public Works Technician II after one full-year of employment.
- Constructs, maintains, and repairs streets, roadways, drainage systems, storm sewers,
- Removes debris and blockages from streets and roadways.
- Operates equipment and vehicles.
- Establishes traffic safety zones while working.
- Replaces existing meters and installs meters on new accounts.
- Stocks crew truck with supplies.
- Clears trees and cuts grass as necessary.
- Performs vegetation management and landscaping work, street repairs, concrete repairs, and utility repairs.
- Performs leaf, snow, and ice removal.
- Addresses public inquiries.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma (or equivalent) and 1 to less than 3 years directly related experience.
- Must possess the ability to obtain and maintain required license as deemed necessary within specified period of time.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license
- Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening and criminal background check.
- A Commercial Driver's License is desirable.

Paid Sick Leave
- All full-time employees earn (1¼) days of paid sick leave for each calendar month of employment and is accumulated without limit.
- Non-Exempt employees may accumulate compensatory leave only for overtime worked which is authorized prior to the performance of such work. Compensatory leave may be accumulated at the rate of 1 1/2 times the regular rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 during a work week. Compensatory leave for nonexempt employees is voluntary but in no instance may exceed 120 hours of accumulated leave. All hours in excess of 120 hours will be compensated on the same basis as approved overtime.
- Employees have 30 days from their hire date to enroll in the following benefits. If an employee does not enroll, they cannot enroll until the next Open Enrollment.
