Senior Magistrate



POSITION SUMMARY

Magistrates are attorneys at law admitted to practice in Ohio. By order of reference from the judges of Cleveland Municipal Court, magistrates are assigned to hear civil and criminal matters and issue magistrate decisions, pursuant to Civil Rule 53, Criminal Rule 19, and Traffic Rule 14, subject to approval by the judges. The Senior Magistrate will have both civil and criminal experience, may remain in the rotation, and will be the direct supervisor to Magistrates.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: (Other duties may be assigned.)

  1. Supervise and manage a team of magistrates and support staff by ensuring an equitable distribution of work within the team, motivating the team, and resolving conflict.
  2. Monitor case assignments and case completion by magistrates to ensure compliance with the established guidelines for case disposition.
  3. Secure coverage of dockets in the event of absence due to illness, vacation, and emergencies.
  4. Train, evaluate and assist in developing the magistrate staff.
  5. Conduct special projects, such as the revision of various printed and electronic materials used by the Magistrate Department, implementation of new legislation, etc., under the direction of the Chief Magistrate.
  6. Oversee compliance with the Departmental Operations Manual of Policies and Procedures.
  7. Research and advise on various legal, procedural and administrative matters at the request of the Chief Magistrate.
  8. Assists the magistrates with troubleshooting case management system issues.
  9. Provide quality service that continuously improves, that meets or exceeds public expectations, and that ensures all are treated with courtesy, dignity, and respect.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

L.L.B. or J.D. Degree and admitted to Ohio Bar with a minimum five (5) years' experience in practice of law; working knowledge of Cleveland Municipal Court Rules of Practice and Procedure and five (5) years of trial practice; familiarity with Ohio Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedure. Experience in all aspects of municipal court magistrate operations. Experience in management or administration, including direct supervision.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Magistrate will supervise and direct the work of General Magistrates and support staff in the performance of their duties.

  • Experience in all aspects of municipal court magistrate operations.
  • Experience in management or administration, including direct supervision.
  • Demonstrates professional level of competency.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to organize and prioritize duties.
  • Solid computer skills
  • Demonstrates ability to conduct legal research.
  • Maintain adherence to the Code of Judicial Conduct, the Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct and good standing with the Ohio Supreme Court.

COURT EXPECTATIONS of EMPLOYEE
In accomplishing the responsibilities of this position, the Court expects that the employee will adhere to the mission and values of the Court as well as all Court policies and procedures. In addition, while carrying out the duties of this position, the employee is expected to model high ethical conduct on and off the job and exhibit a professional and respectful demeanor with all Court employees.

Qualified applicants will be required to submit to testing and may be required to provide writing samples. Proof of education and employment references will be required before final interview. Employment predicated upon successful completion of criminal record check and drug testing required. You'll be considered a probationary employee for your first 180 days of employment.

Salary : $81,760 - $106,291
