SUMMARY: The Assistant Director of Communications supports the Director of Communications in the development, execution, and coordination of public information, community, and media relations. This role assists in advising the Mayor on communication strategies, supports the City's Public Information Officer (PIO) functions, and helps coordinate the City's communications and marketing activities.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the implementation and maintenance of a city-wide strategic communication plan to keep the public and workforce highly informed, engage the public in local government, and manage media relations.
- Support communication efforts with diverse audiences on city-wide initiatives, major media events, and significant incidents affecting Cleveland Heights citizens.
- Help manage and utilize all forms of communication, including social media, the city’s website, media channels, public forums, print materials, surveys, and other communication methods.
- Develop and update key internal and external communications, presentations, fact sheets, and messages utilizing various multimedia formats.
- Draft and edit remarks, speeches, talking points, presentations, letters to editors, social media posts, and commentaries.
- Assist in crisis management and emergency communication efforts, coordinating with key external stakeholders.
- Develop and execute marketing campaigns and strategies to support the strategic mission of the City.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
- Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Exercise supervision of personnel within the communication team and related areas of responsibility.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's Degree in a related field and three to five years of progressively responsible experience directly related to communications or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:
Must have at the time of hire and be able to maintain a valid Ohio driver's license.

HOURS OF WORK
The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM (40 hours per week). The position requires reporting to City Hall.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
