General Statement of Job

Under direct supervision, inspects, repairs, and maintains functional parts of automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery, such as diesel and electric buses and cars along with their chargers, pumps, trucks, tractors, and any other equipment used in transit operations and maintenance, using hoists, hand tools, gauges, drills, grinding wheels, and testing devices.

Examples Of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

Essential Job Functions

  • Inspects defective equipment and diagnose malfunctions, using motor analyzers and multiplexing software, wiring diagrams, pressure gages, chassis charts, and factory manuals.
  • Repairs, maintains, troubleshoots, and services diesel buses, electric buses, and charger fleets.
  • Maintains good communication with property staff, responding to questions but also passing concerns to management or internal client service representatives.
  • Monitors subcontractor's work to ensure quality control.
  • Maintains proper paperwork and documentation for repairs and installations.
  • Add notes to work orders to enable follow-up communications with staff and historical data.
  • Updates inventory in the maintenance software for any parts and equipment used on job sites.
  • Disassembles and overhauls internal combustion engines, pumps, pump power units, generators, transmissions, clutches, and rear ends, using hand tools and hoists.
  • Adjusts brakes, aligns wheels, tightens bolts and screws, and reassembles equipment.
  • Operates equipment to test its functioning.
  • Changes oil, checks batteries, repairs tires, and tubes, and lubricates equipment and machinery.
  • Informs the Maintenance Coordinator on tool needs, tool condition, and the projected needs for inventory replacement.
  • Provides on-call duty coverage during non-working hours as per duty roster.
  • Plans, carries out, and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors.
  • Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
  • Tests, services, and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
  • Repairs brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems.
  • Changes and repairs tires and tubes.
  • Evaluates the status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, and perform or schedule needed repairs.
  • Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
  • Operates and/or uses a variety of equipment, tools, and supplies including motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes; power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; personal computer, calculator, phone; mobile or portable radio, electric grinders, hand reamer, power wrenches, screwdrivers, soldering iron, torque wrench, tweezers, air compressor, arc-welding machine, spot-welding machine, fixtures, gauges, jigs, manuals, measuring instruments, templates, computer analyzer, scopes, manuals, hand tools, milling machine, motor lift; etc.

Additional Job Functions

  • Performs duties as required in the absence of the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Performs emergency repairs when requested by any city official.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Education And Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent supplemented with specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field; two (2) years of job-related experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses or Certifications

Must have a valid South Carolina Commercial driver's license, or ability to obtain one within six (6) months. High Voltage training or certification preferred.
