Role Description
The Assistant Director of Community Development is a leadership role responsible for supporting the overall operations of the department, including Planning, Building Inspections, and Health, with primary oversight of the Planning Division’s daily operations and strategic initiatives. This position advances long-range planning, administers development regulations, ensures compliance with state and local codes, supports high-quality service to residents and stakeholders, and serves as acting director when needed. The role is instrumental in guiding community growth through policy development, zoning, subdivision review, and long-term land use planning.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or a closely related field required
- Master’s degree preferred
- Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible municipal planning experience
- At least one (1) year of supervisory or leadership experience
- Strong knowledge of planning principles, zoning, subdivision processes, and development regulations
- Knowledge of Texas local government requirements and applicable codes
- Proven ability to lead teams and manage complex development projects
- Strong skills in problem-solving, negotiation, and consensus-building
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical reports and public presentations
- Valid Class C Texas driver license required; AICP certification strongly preferred
