POLICE OFFICER
The City of Clear Lake is seeking qualified applicants for employment in the position of police officer. The department currently has one vacant position due to an early retirement and is adding one additional position around January 1, 2027.
We are a team-orientated proactive department that offers excellent benefits, training opportunities, special assignments, and shift differential pay. Certified police officers may be eligible for pay and vacation commensurate with their years of service and a $5,000.00 sign-on bonus. New employees are eligible to earn vacation time after 90 days of employment.
Applicants must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid Iowa Driver’s license, and maintain such license in compliance with the City’s Driver’s License Retention Policy; be a U.S. citizen; possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent; pass a hearing and color vision test, have uncorrected vision of not less than 20/100 in both eyes, corrected to 20/20, not have a conviction for a felony or any crime involving domestic violence. Preference will be given to candidates that are certified police officers.
Applicants selected to participate in the hiring process will be required to participate in a written exam, physical agility test, interview, and a comprehensive background investigation. Finalists will be required to successfully meet all requirements set forth by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA), undergo a medical examination, psychological evaluation, and pre-employment drug screen. The written exam and physical agility test may be waived if the applicant is a current certified police officer.
Starting pay is between $32.66 and $42.79 an hour, depending on qualifications. The city offers no premium cost family health insurance, city contributions to a Health Savings Account (HSA), and IPERS.
