The internship is a temporary, part-time, extra help position which is limited to a maximum of 960 hours per fiscal year and will typically be limited to a maximum of 29 hours per week. Hours vary depending upon the position and department assigned.

Salary Ranges for Classifications:

Student Intern Salary: $16.90

Graduate Intern Salary Range: $18.59 - $23.24


City Manager’s Office 

  • City Clerk: The City Clerk's Office has a broad range of responsibilities. As the manager of the City Council's business records and actions, the City Clerk's Office provides comprehensive information to the community and the internal organization. In addition to the traditional responsibilities of overseeing the City Council's business records, the Clerk's Office manages the election process and maintains record management for the organization.


General Services Department

  • Public Works & Engineering: The Public Works and Engineering Division focuses primarily on projects and programs that affect the city right-of-way. Right-of-ways exist in places where infrastructure is built. Typical rights-of-way include roadways, sidewalks, curb and gutter, and easements for power or telephone lines and drainage facilities. Development project review, drainage and storm water services, street maintenance, traffic investigation, and permits for encroachment, street use, and transportation are all a part of this division.
  • Community Services: The Community Services Division is comprised of garbage and recycling services, transit services, streetlight and traffic signal maintenance, customer service support, landscape maintenance, graffiti removal services, and grant administration. Service Requests may be made using SeeClickFix or downloading the app from Apple or the Google Play Store.
  • Facilities, Grounds & Fleet: The Facilities, Grounds, and Fleet Division is responsible for the maintenance of city buildings and other properties, as well as any new construction or remodeling of city-owned facilities. In addition, this division purchases and maintains all city vehicles. This division is also responsible for maintaining all city-owned trees and landscaping.


Community Development Department

The Community Development Department works collaboratively with other city departments to provide a variety of city services through the following division: Planning, Building & Safety, and House & Grants.

  • Planning: The Planning Division serves as an information center to assist citizens and the development community in understanding and applying Citrus Heights development policies in accordance with the General Plan and the Zoning Code. The division also serves as the primary staff support for the Planning Commission. Also, under Planning, the Business License Division is responsible for regulating business activities that occur within the city limits. The license promotes enforcement of city ordinances that protect the public and prevent nuisances and neighborhood disturbances.
  • Building & Safety: The Building and Safety Division is responsible for reviewing plans, issuing building permits, and doing field inspections of buildings to ensure compliance with local and state mandated regulations related to building construction, maintenance, rehabilitation, and accessibility.
  • Housing & Grants: The Housing and Grants Division administers the Federal Community Development Block Grant Program, coordinating the city's housing efforts, as well as seeking and administering other grant programs for the city.


Economic Development & Community Engagement Department

The Economic Development & Community Engagement Department offers internships within Communications, which is held within the EDCE team. The Communications team assists in sharing City news and information with residents, employees, businesses, and the general community of Citrus Heights. Internship work could include:

  • Generating digital and physical content
  • Event assistance
  • Social media management
  • Media reporting and tracking
  • Writing for e-newsletters


Administrative Services Department

The Administrative Services Department serves as an internal customer service provider of integrated services including human resources, finance, information technology, and risk management.

  • Finance: The Finance Division is responsible for maintaining and reporting the city’s accounting systems, completing required financial reporting, managing the city’s financial investments, budget preparation and implementation.
  • Human Resources: The Human Resources Division is responsible for implementing the city's mission, vision, and core values, as well as recruiting, hiring, and retaining a talented workforce.
  • Information Technology (IT): The Information Technology Division is responsible for supporting the city’s network, data, and application systems.


Citrus Heights Police Department

The Police Department offers a variety of law enforcement responsibilities. The internship program is designed for college students pursuing Criminal Justice who are interested in a career in law enforcement. Interns gain hands-on experience by working alongside both sworn and professional staff, with exposure to all units within the department.  Interns who demonstrate strong work ethic, character, and integrity may be considered for future opportunities, including part-time or full-time positions, as part of the Department’s succession planning efforts. All interns are required to successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation to ensure the highest standards of volunteer service.

Minimum Qualifications

Student Intern: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate or graduate program.

Graduate Student Intern: Equivalent to the completion of a Bachelor’s degree with major coursework directly related to the position assigned. Current enrollment in a Master's degree program from an accredited college or university must be maintained.

License or Certificate: May need to possess a valid California driver’s license and proof of automobile liability insurance as required by the position.

PHYSICAL/SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

On a continuous basis, sit at a desk for long periods of time; intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use a telephone, and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; and lift or carry the weight of 10 pounds or less.
