Qualified applicants will be invited to attend the Physical Agility Test, Police Recruit Written Exam and an interview. Additional details will be provided prior to testing.

You can waive the written exam by submitting a P.O.S.T PELLETB score of 45 or above, taken within the past 12 months from the date you apply. These results must be attached to your application to be considered.

Age Requirement: Upon completion of the law enforcement academy, recruits will be appointed as peace officers. Pursuant to Government Code 1031.4, Applicants must be at least 21 years of age on, or before appointment as a peace officer.

Police Officer Promotion & Benefits: Police Recruits who successfully complete the Police Officer training academy will be promoted to the position of Sworn Police Officer and become eligible for the following salary and benefits:

Sworn Police Officer Salary & Benefits

$8,333 - $10,128 monthly

$100,005 - $121,536 annually

Monthly City contributions to the 457 Deferred Compensation Retirement Plan and the Retirement Health Savings Plan

155 Holiday Hours per Fiscal Year (can be converted to pay)

Must be able to successfully pass an extensive Police Background Investigation and Administrative Review. Please refer to the Special Requirements Section below for details.

Definition

Under direct supervision and tutorage of a tactical officer, develops an awareness of the functions, activities, and responsibilities of a Police Officer.Police Recruits must attend a P.O.S.T certified Police Officer training academy designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the criminal justice system and specialized training in various laws, police practices and procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid, and physical conditioning, and participate in departmental training/orientation programs. Upon successful completion of a Police Officer training academy, Police Recruits will be appointed to and sworn in as a probationary entry level Police Officer with full Police authority.

Completion of the Training Academy: The Police Recruit position is conditional and based on your successful completion of the police officer training academy. If, for any reason, you are unable to successfully complete the police officer training academy, you will be separated from employment and will have to reapply for any future position.

Essential Functions

  • Observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places.
  • Use and care for firearms.
  • Think and act quickly in emergencies, and judge situations and people accurately.
  • Learn, understand, and interpret laws and regulations.
  • Prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education

Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential job duties of the position is qualifying. A typical example includes:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Supplemental Police Science courses (preferred).

Experience

  • This is an entry level position; no work experience is required.

Knowledge Of

  • Criminal justice system.

Ability To

  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Meet standards of physical stature, endurance, and agility established by the City.
  • Learn standard broadcasting procedures of a Police radio system.

Training/Safety Requirements

Job specific training will be provided according to class specifications during work hours.

  • Possess a valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Receive satisfactory results from a background investigation, polygraph test, psychological evaluation, a physical examination, which includes a drug screen, and an administrative review.
  • Due to California State Law regarding firearms, you must be at least 20 ½ years-of-age at the time of applying for this position, and 21 years-of-age by the time you are appointed as a Sworn Police Officer.

  • Upon promotion to a Sworn Police Officer, the employee unit changes to the Chino Police Officers Association (CPOA)

Physical Requirements

  • Heavy Lifting: Lifting over 50 lbs., with frequent lifting, pushing, and/or carrying of objects weighing over 25 lbs.
  • Agility: Ability to move quickly and easily, often including the ability to crawl, stoop or bend.
  • Color Vision: Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Distant Vision (Excellent): Without correction, vision not less than 20/40 in each eye, which must correct to 20/20 in one eye and not less than 20/25 in the other eye.
  • Work Environment - Outdoors: Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
