The City of Chino Hills is seeking applications for the positions of Assistant Engineer and Associate Engineer to join our Public Works Engineering Division. These positions support the planning, design, review, and delivery of public infrastructure projects that serve the community.
We are looking for a collaborative and motivated engineering professional who is eager to contribute to City projects and community improvements. The ideal candidate is organized, adaptable, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining strong attention to detail. Strong communication skills are essential, including the ability to work effectively with staff, contractors, consultants, outside agencies, and the public.
The Assistant Engineer is the entry-level classification in the series and performs routine engineering work under direct supervision. The Associate Engineer is the journey-level classification and performs the full range of engineering duties with greater independence and general supervision.

SOME OF THE ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Perform professional and technical civil engineering work related to public infrastructure projects.
- Prepare and review engineering plans, specifications, and contract documents.
- Utilize computer-aided design (CAD) and other engineering tools to support project delivery.
- Coordinate projects and activities with consultants, contractors, developers, City departments, and outside agencies.
- Conduct field investigations, inspections, and project-related site visits.
- Maintain engineering records and prepare technical reports.
- Respond to public inquiries and provide technical assistance.
Assistant Engineer:
- Utilize computer-aided design (CAD) for the drafting and design of assigned projects.
- Assist with engineering studies and preparation of reports and recommendations.
- Draft engineering plans and studies.
- Assist with the review of encroachment permits and oversized haul permit applications.
- Operate computer-aided drafting, design, and mapping programs.
Associate Engineer:
- Conduct engineering studies and prepare reports with recommendations.
- Review and prepare engineering plans and studies.
- Review encroachment permits and oversized haul permit applications.
- Utilize computer-aided drafting, design, and mapping programs.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Assistant Engineer:
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of civil engineering
- Applicable laws and regulatory codes relevant to assigned area of responsibility
- Methods, materials, and techniques used in the construction of public works projects
- Principles of advanced mathematics and their application to engineering work
Ability to:
- Perform technical research and solve engineering problems
- Prepare plans and drawings neatly and accurately
- Prepare, understand, and interpret engineering plans, specifications and contract documents
- Respond to difficult and sensitive public inquiries
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including City staff, City officials, and the public
Associate Engineer:
Knowledge of:

ASSISTANT ENGINEER QUALIFICATIONS
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be to meet the minimum qualifications of:
EXPERIENCE:
Engineering experience sufficient to demonstrate the possession of the required knowledge and abilities
Highly desired: One (1) year of engineering experience is desired.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a related field.

Possession of a valid California Class 'C' Driver's License with an acceptable driving record is required.
CERTIFICATION:
Highly desired: Possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) certificate issued by the State of California.

ASSOCIATE ENGINEER QUALIFICATIONS
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be to meet the minimum qualifications of:
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of increasingly responsible professional civil engineering experience.
Highly desired: Geographic Information Systems experienceEDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a related field.

LICENSE:
Possession of a valid California Class 'C' Driver's License with an acceptable driving record is required.
CERTIFICATION:
