Pay Grade: Grade 10L; Step 05 – Step 08
Salary Range: $22.52/Hour-$26.29/Hour
Schedule: Mon – Fri 40 Hours/Week
Certifications/Licenses Required: Valid Massachusetts CDL Class A license, MA 1C Hoisting License, 2A Hoisting License, International Society of Arboriculture Certification or Massachusetts Qualified Tree Warden (preferred), Electrical Hazard Awareness Program (EHAP) Certification, First Aid and CPR Certified.
SUMMARY
The City of Chicopee’s DPW Forestry Department is looking to hire a Heavy Motor Equipment Operator This position operates and maintains all types of heavy equipment/vehicles owned by the City of Chicopee. Maintains fluid levels and greases equipment as required. Work is performed under the supervisor of the City Arborist who assigns work and areas of responsibility. This is a 40 hour work week position with mandatory overtime and emergency response.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Operate log truck and other heavy equipment.
- Crew leader as needed.
- Assists with the removal and pruning of city trees.
- Operates all equipment used in Forestry operations.
- Assists with maintaining city tree nursery.
- Assists with the planting, transplanting, and establishment of trees, bushes, and shrubs.
- Responsible for the safe and proficient operation of all Forestry Department equipment and techniques.
- Responsible for maintenance of Forestry Department equipment.
- Assists with the care of all city trees as pertaining to arboricultural standards and the Public Shade Tree Laws.
- Performs aerial work to assists with tasks such as Christmas light installation and aerial inspections of public facilities.
- Enforces safety regulations and city policies at all times.
- Maintains communication with supervisors, subordinates, and the general public.
- Participates in continuing education to maintain ce1iifications and licenses.
- Participates in all facets of snow operations.
- Maintains safety standards for employees and public in regards to Forestry Department operations.
- Must be available for overtime, especially during weather emergencies.
- All other related tasks as assigned by the City Arborist and/or Superintendent of Public Works.
- Abide by City of Chicopee Health and Safety policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Comprehensive knowledge of State, Federal, municipal policies and regulations as they relate to arboriculture.
- Working knowledge and proficiency in the operation of all equipment used in Forestry Department operations.
- Working knowledge and proficiency in rigging equipment and techniques.
- Skilled position requiring physical ability and supervisory skills.
- Ability to work effectively in emergencies.
- Ability to interpret plans and specifications.
- Ability to work independently.
- Knowledge of and experience in performing a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and manual tasks.
- Working knowledge of a wide-variety of hand tools, air tools and hydraulic tools.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Willingness to perform heavy manual labor
