As an Equipment Operator II, you will:
  • Operate a variety of motorized equipment, including tanker trucks, vacuum trucks, dump trucks, and backhoes, to transport materials, tools, and personnel to job sites.
  • Use specialized equipment to support essential City operations, from debris removal to digging and maintenance tasks.
  • Perform operational tests and inspections to ensure facility systems and components are running efficiently.
  • Inspect and perform minor maintenance on motor equipment, reporting any issues to your supervisor.

  • A skilled Equipment Operator who knows how to use heavy machinery and hand/power tools to keep things running smoothly.
  • A team player with the ability to respond to emergency situations, including inclement weather and overtime requirements.
  • A professional with a valid Class A CDL who’s ready to put their experience to work for the City of Chesapeake (tanker endorsement required within 6 months of hire).

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires completion of 10th grade in high school. High school diploma, GED OR specialized vocational training is preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standard, this class requires a minimum of six months of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City’s Driving Standards. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required. Specialized certifications may be required based on department assigned.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to confined spaces. Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

  • Pump Station utility experience
  • Experience operating a vacuum truck, pump truck or other related equipment.

In accordance with City policy, this position is deemed safety-sensitive. As such, applicants for this position are subject to pre-employment drug/alcohol testing after receiving a conditional offer of employment and may also be subject to random testing. This drug test includes testing for marijuana. Possession of a medical marijuana card will not excuse an applicant from the testing process; however, a test will not be considered positive for marijuana if a valid medical marijuana certification is presented unless the position requires a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or is a sworn law-enforcement officer/deputy.
