The Permit Technician performs administrative, technical, and customer service functions in support of the Building Inspections division of the Community Development department. The position serves as a primary point of contact for residents, contractors, businesses, and other stakeholders while supporting efficient department operations and compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and policies.

- Intake, review, process, and issue permits.
- Collect permit fees and process payments.
- Maintain permit records and permit tracking systems.
Coordinates inspection activities and supports inspection operations.
- Schedule inspections and maintain inspection calendars.
- Provide inspection-related information to customers and staff.
Provides customer service and serves as primary public contact for the department.
- Respond to inquiries by phone, e-mail, and in person.
- Assist customers with permits, zoning, ordinances, and property information.
- Route inquiries to appropriate staff for resolution.
Performs administrative support duties for department operations and compliance.
- Prepare reports, certifications, and related documentation.
- Process daily financial transactions and deposits.
- Support departmental reporting and website updates.
Provides administrative assistance to the Planning Division.
- Assist with public hearing notices and planning communications.
- Maintain Planning Commission case files and records.
- Support planning-related recordkeeping and database updates.
- Provide administrative support for planning activities and projects.
Supports the operation and maintenance of permitting software systems.
- Maintain permitting software operations and user access.
- Ensure accurate data entry and system records.
- Assist staff with software-related functions and troubleshooting.
- Support system organization and record accuracy.
Supports departmental operations through teamwork and general administrative assistance.
- Coordinate with department staff and other City departments.
- Support daily operations under direction of the Senior Permit Technician.
- Assist with departmental projects and operational needs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Three years of work experience in administrative support or customer service, preferably in a municipality
- Ability to become proficient with the City’s permitting software at a system administrator level.
- Professional and appropriate responsiveness when interacting with the public
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Excel spreadsheets)
- Knowledge of building permit software or ability to obtain
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work independently and complete complex projects
- Demonstrated skill in spelling, grammar, mathematics and computer applications
- Ability to communicate effectively, efficiently and professionally
- Excellent organization and customer service skills
- Possession of, or ability to obtain a state permit technician certification is a plus
- Ability to speak a language in addition to English, in particular Spanish is a plus
