What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Lineworker position at City of Chaska?
This position provides oversight of line workers assigned to installing, maintaining and restoring electrical service to the City of Chaska, its residents and commercial customers. Relays information between crew and supervisors to ensure communication delivery.
- Responds to and may supervise service calls with work crews, ensuring safe and efficient electrical power restoration.
- Addresses customer concerns with residents or commercial consumers on-site, enlisting additional support from Electrical Foreman and Electrical Director when required.
- Provides oversight of routine maintenance and troubleshooting for City’s electrical system.
- Leads daily meetings with the crew and communicates projects and tasks
- Assists with oversight of electric work crews at overhead and underground construction sites.
- Oversees and may perform other line work such as street light repairs, industrial meter reading, line clearance, overhead/underground construction, and locating.
- Keeps equipment/tools maintained, assisting with Inventory control where necessary.
- Performs reading of industrial meters.
- Ensures safe work environment for work crews through adherence, training and coaching of safety regulations, work procedures and practices; this includes attendance at safety meetings.
- Maintains place in on-call rotation; as municipal employee, maintains availability for emergency situations.
- Builds and maintains a positive team environment by modeling positive collaboration
- Performs all other related duties as requested or assigned.
Education
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Successful completion of an accredited Electrical Line Worker program
Experience
- 6 years of line work experience
- 5 years of Journeyman Lineworker experience preferred
- Holds an active Journeyman Line Worker card
Other Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must reside within 40 minutes of the Chaska Municipal Services Building (using Google Maps, MapQuest, Waze, Apple Maps as a guide – may be asked to provide proof).
- Valid MN Driver’s License (Class A with applicable endorsements)
- High Voltage Electric Certification helpful
- Working knowledge of same or similar municipal electric system
- Excellent communication skills essential for delivering direction between supervisors and crew
EQUIPMENT USED
- Heavy equipment including 40/60 ft. bucket trucks, front end loader, digger derrick truck, service and dump trucks, fork lift, excavator, vactor, wood chipper, water pump, wire trailer, etc.
- Hand tools including saw, chainsaw, drill, crimper, etc.
- Meter reading equipment

Mental Effort
- Significant attention to safety standards, procedures, and practices, ensuring safe and appropriate training and supervision for lineworkers
- Rapid response and accurate problem solving in emergency repair and outage situations
Physical Demands
- Proper and safe operation of trucks, bucket equipment and ladders, and other equipment and tools
- Varying and some prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, observing, identifying colors, climbing, balancing, and lifting, carrying and moving objects 80 lbs.
- Ease in working at heights of 100 feet and in trenches of 5 feet in depth
Working Conditions
- Driving to and from work sites
- Working outside in all seasons with varying levels of exposure to wind, rain, snow, ice, sun
- Working within confines of both underground and overhead electrical system structures and construction sites including energized conductors
