General Summary



Jefferson-Madison Regional Library is seeking candidates to be considered for the position of Technical Services Specialist for the Central Library who are highly motivated and who support JMRL's Mission Statement to foster personal growth and life-long learning for all by connecting people with ideas, information, and each other.

The preferred starting salary for this position is $17.27 hourly ($35,921.60 annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position which provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays, plus paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, City's retirement options, gym membership reimbursement, and continuing education/training opportunities.

This full-time position performs work receiving, processing, and preparing materials for circulation, entering data into integrated library system database, at the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library (JMRL). Work is performed under the general supervision of the Supervising Technical Services Librarian.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Processes and receives library materials, including books, audio-visual materials, kit materials, etc.
  • Matches contents of shipments to packing slips and enters appropriate information into acquisition order records in the Integrated Library System software.
  • Resolves errors in shipping and with vendors and keeps records of problems. Edits acquisition records to reflect receipt.
  • Creates, edits, and maintains detailed electronic item records across multiple ILS (Integrated Library Systems) workflows for staff and public access.
  • Prepares new library materials for circulation by covering, labeling, stamping, and adding stickers.
  • Distributes processed materials to their ultimate destination based on item record coding.
  • Amends library materials by reconciling discrepancies between labels and database, updating labeling to reflect current standards, and repairing physical damage.
  • Processes incoming library materials for repair or to route items to various departments for replacement and withdrawal.
  • Responds to and fulfills requests for labels and other materials from library employee’s system wide.
  • Opens and closes Jefferson-Madison Regional Library (JMRL) technical services department,
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of JMRL equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
Other Duties:
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.

Education, Experience and Skills

Education and Experience: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.

  • Bachelor’s degree and some related experience and basic desktop computer skills, including word processing and printing.
OR
  • Associate’s degree and 3 years of related experience and basic desktop computer skills, including word processing and printing.
OR
  • High School diploma or GED and 5 years of related experience and basic desktop computer skills, including word processing and printing.
OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Preferred:
  • 3 years of experience using library ILS (Integrated Library Systems)
Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:
  • Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
Job Knowledge:
  • Basic familiarity with the work to know common principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.
  • Working knowledge of library principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of computer hardware and Microsoft Office software applications.
Reading:
  • Intermediate: ability to read and understand written materials such as newspapers, magazines, journals, multi-step instruction manuals, and reference materials.
Writing:
  • Intermediate: Ability to write reports, prepare materials such as business letters, explanations, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
Math:
  • Intermediate: Ability to work with and understand number systems; simple formulas, practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, and measurement such as technical specifications.
Communication Skills:
  • Basic: Provide standard information to and interacts with others outside direct reporting relationships on procedures or general policies. Interaction requires recognizing different points of view to ensure understanding and appropriate response. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers and customers.
Independence and Decision-Making:
  • Requires General Direction: Normally performs the job by following general instructions or established standard operating procedures and/or policies. There is some discretion when making decisions among a few easily identifiable choices of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance is reviewed frequently.
Technical Skills:
  • Skilled: Comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the assigned and apparent job responsibilities. Intermediate skill in Microsoft Office applications and/or departmental software.
Fiscal Responsibilities:
  • No budgetary/fiscal responsibilities.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • No responsibility for direction or supervision of others.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Physical Demands:

  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Work requires pushing/pulling, standing for extended periods, stooping, bending, and carrying.
  • Must be able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer)
Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software and Hardware:
  • Typically requires use of standard office equipment and telephone, and related software and hardware; uses book trucks, carts and bins, and any other equipment as appropriate or as assigned.
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in office environment where there may be exposure to computer screen for extended periods of time, monitor glare and dust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
