Parks & Recreation Department – Pool and Swim Team Manager
The City of Charleston is seeking candidates to fill the position of Pool and Swim Team Manager in the Parks & Recreation Department. This seasonal position is full-time exempt for 20 weeks. The starting salary is $844 per week, up to $16,880 for the season.
This posting will remain open until the position is filled.
- 1 hour of Personal Leave for every 40 hours worked
· Oversee daily pool operations, ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for patrons.
· Implement and enforce strict safety and health policies in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations
· Schedule, train, and supervise lifeguards and other pool staff, including conducting regular staff meetings and in-service training.
· Manage pool maintenance tasks, chemical balancing, and facility upkeep to ensure optimal pool conditions.
· Handle administrative duties such as scheduling, budget management, and communication with facility management
· Advises the Director on recommendations for the development of Recreation and Facilities.
· Promotes the public use of safe recreation facilities, areas and equipment for group and individual play, recreation, and relaxation through a continuing program of public education
· Lead the swim team, providing coaching, mentorship, and development opportunities for swimmers of all levels.
· Design and implement training programs that cater to the needs of the swim team, focusing on technique improvement, physical conditioning, and competitive readiness.
· Organize, schedule, and coordinate swim meets, including logistics, registrations, and staffing.
· Foster a team environment that emphasizes sportsmanship, personal growth, and competitive excellence.
· Engage with swimmers and their families, ensuring open communication and fostering a supportive community.
· The Summer Pool and Swim Team Manager must exhibit good problem solving ability and good judgment in keeping with the mission of the Recreation Department.
· Graduation from a college or university shall be the minimum education requirement, and it is desirable for the manager to have a degree in Recreation, Leisure Studies or a related field.
· Significant experience in aquatic facility management and competitive swimming, with prior leadership roles highly desirable.
· Strong understanding of pool operations, maintenance, and safety protocols.
· Current Lifeguard Certification, CPR and First Aid Certification, and Certified Pool Operator (CPO)/Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification or be willing to obtain prior to start.
· Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor athletes of various ages and skill levels. Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by swim meet schedules and pool operations.
· Current valid driver’s license necessary.
· Knowledge of data base computer systems and spread sheet software is essential.
· A thorough knowledge of the theory and philosophy of recreation and the ability to interpret this philosophy to others.
