The Environmental Technician serves as an intensive, yet flexible part-time internship with Environmental Services. The internship will protect public health and the environment by ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local environmental health and quality by conducting environmental inspections and public outreach.The internship provides support to Public Works Assistant Director, Environmental Manager, and other environmental-focused positions within the City surveying, inspecting, updating, and responding to environmental programs. The internship focuses on stormwater related environmental programs including cross-connection protection, stormwater separate storm sewer (MS4) program, illicit discharge detection and elimination (IDDE) program, stormwater retention and detention program, public education activities, and environmental investigations. The internship provides exposure and experience to additional environmental programs such as industrial pretreatment, air quality, hazardous waste, liquid waste, vector, abatement, and construction.We are seeking a highly self-motivated individual able accomplish tasks under light to little supervision and enjoy working outdoors. The position works a flexible, weekday schedule, approximately 10-20 hours per week during the academic year and 20-25 hours per week during the summer. No experience required. College student studying in a science or environmental field preferred.

• Provide premier customer service to internal and external customers by responding to requests in a timely and professional manner. Ensures the City's environmental programs are upheld by providing verification, reporting and enforcement of local, state and federal regulations.
• Perform inspections for private retention and detention facilities, ensuring proper maintenance and requiring all facilities to meet federal, state and local regulations.
• Perform inspections for the illicit discharge detection and elimination (IDDE) program by conducting inspection of City outfalls for illicit discharge, testing the potential illicit discharge using scientific instruments, tracing potential illicit discharge, and eliminating the illicit discharge as required by the MS4 permit.
• Perform inspections for the cross-connection prevention program, ensuring all backflow assemblies are annually tested.
• Perform inspections of storm water pollution prevention plans (SWPPP) of construction sites by conducting routine stormwater inspections and ensuring compliance of best management practices as required with federal, state and local regulations and in accordance to the MS4 permit.
• Protect public and private property from flooding by inspecting storm sewer flow areas and resolving drainage complaints.
• Communicate all inspections with reports.
• Completes administrative duties by maintaining records, writing various reports, completing forms and paperwork, entering data into computer, and writing letters and memos.
• Provide testimony of violations of federal, state and local regulations by attending court hearings and trials.
• Operate City Vehicle to accomplish tasks.
• Regular attendance required.
• Other duties as assigned.
• High school diploma or GED required. Some college education in an environment-related degree program is preferred.
• No experience required
• Valid Class C Texas Driver's License required, with driving record meeting City driving standards. This position requires the use of City vehicles on City business.
