We are seeking an individual, who has demonstrated a willing commitment to these values, holding them in high regard, to join our team as a Permit Specialist within our Code Enforcement department.

The purpose of this position is to perform complex technical work in the review and processing of construction project permits to include guiding applicants through permitting process, performing same day minor plan reviews, and various other higher-level duties. This position also provides assistance and support to the Building Official and other department staff by performing a variety of administrative and organizational functions. Other duties include obtaining, reviewing and issuing permits, registering contractors, issuing certificates of occupancy and health permits, and processing invoices. In addition, this position will manage and facilitate, Building Appeals and Advisory Board meetings and appointments, preparing meeting agendas and minutes, posting agendas, preparation of Board’s packets, assisting with Records Management and Open Records requests, performing various general office administrative duties and projects as assigned and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees.


How You Add Value

  • Provides premier customer service to internal and external customers by responding to requests in a timely and professional manner. Assists the public by providing information over the telephone or in person in a professional, conscientious, and courteous manner. May also represent the Building Inspections Department at neighborhood meetings and community events during evenings and/or weekends.
  • Conducts permit and plan review activities, which include accepting and processing permit applications, contractor registrations, checking for completeness and compliance with applicable local and state requirements; reviews and issues permits for construction and issues over-the-counter electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and special event sign permits; processes and issues approved health, commercial, residential, and fire permits; and/or, performing other related activities.
  • Coordinate and manage Building Appeals and Advisory Board meetings and appointments by preparing and distributing agendas, recording minutes, posting notices, tracking attendance, and assembling Board packets. Attendance at these monthly evening meetings is required.
  • Provides technical support associated with permitting activities, which include coordinating public inquiry on development processes, codes, ordinances, and permit requirements; processing utility releases; scheduling inspections; documenting complaints; maintains required contractor registrations; and/or performing other related activities.
  • Performs financial activities in support of department operations, which include collecting related fees; administering accounting systems for transaction receipts; making daily deposits; balancing til drawer; and generating revenue reports.
  • Provides numerous administrative services by typing, proofreading, preparing reports with emphasis on accuracy, coordinating and processing invoices, records maintenance, open records requests, customer service and cooperation with other departments, and yearly Department budget.
  • Screens calls and participates in duties related to department administration, including ordering and maintaining the office and its supplies, and other records
  • and agenda items.
  • Must operate a variety of equipment including a multi-line phone, copier, 10-key calculator, and computer. Software used includes Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) , Adobe, Laserfiche, and EnerGov., and Internet browsers.
  • Provides back-up coverage to other areas of Development Services, including Public Works and Planning, as needed.
  • Regular attendance required.

What You Bring to the Role

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least two years of building inspections customer service, or related municipal experience preferred.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License required, meeting City driving standards,
  • International Code Council Permit Technician certification preferred upon hired but required within one (1) year of hire.
