The City of Carpinteria is seeking applications for a Pool Lifeguard I/II/III

Ideal candidates should be available to work morning, afternoon, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.

Important Training Dates:

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Training

(must attend both weekend training dates to become ARC certified):

April 4–5 AND April 11–12

Mandatory All Pool Staff Pre-Season Training: June 6–7

Pool Lifeguards, under supervision, perform lifeguarding duties to ensure the safety of patrons, enforce rules and regulations, and respond to emergency situations in aquatic environments. Advancement may occur after demonstrated proficiency, positive evaluations, required hours, and certification.

Pool Lifeguard I ($21.10/hour) Entry-level position focused on developing foundational skills in aquatic supervision, rule enforcement, emergency response, and customer service. Works under close supervision and is expected to maintain alertness and reliability while performing surveillance and assisting programs.

Pool Lifeguard II ($23.26/hour)

Intermediate-level position performing the full scope of Pool Lifeguard I duties under general supervision. Independently instructs swim lessons, mentors’ new staff, may serve as acting lead during assigned shifts, and demonstrates strong communication and leadership.

Pool Lifeguard III ($25.65/hour)

Advanced-level Lifeguard Responsible For Leading Daily Pool Operations, Conducting In-service Trainings, Mentoring Staff, And Supporting Incident Management. May Teach Certification Courses And Serve As Shift Lead In The Absence Of Full-time Staff.Duties May Include, But Are Not Limited To, The Following:

  • Monitor assigned surveillance zones to ensure patron safety and enforce facility rules.
  • Perform water rescues and administer CPR, AED, and first aid as required.
  • Maintain continuous vigilance and scanning techniques according to industry standards.
  • Assist with pool setup, teardown, deck organization, and facility cleanliness.
  • Assist in managing emergency situations and documenting incidents.
  • Respond to inquiries and provide courteous, effective customer service.
  • Participate in mandatory in-service training; maintain certifications.
  • Support swimming lesson instruction; Level II and III may independently lead classes.
  • Lead drills, training sessions, and evaluations (Level III).
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Any Combination Equivalent To The Education And Experience Likely To Provide The Required Knowledge And Abilities Would Be Qualifying. A Typical Way To Gain Such Knowledge And Abilities Would Be:

Pool Lifeguard I

  • Must be at least 15 years of age; 16 preferred.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification required
  • Six months of paid or volunteer aquatics experience preferred.

Pool Lifeguard II

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1,000 hours of lifeguarding experience OR current Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification with 200 hours of instructing hours
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification required
  • WSI certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership, reliability, and communication skills.
  • Typically promoted from Lifeguard I with positive performance evaluations.

Pool Lifeguard III

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Some college coursework in recreation, kinesiology, or a related field preferred.
  • 1,500 hours of lifeguarding experience.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification.
  • WSI certification required.
  • LGI certification required.
  • Proven leadership and ability to conduct trainings and support operations.

Other Requirements:

  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish, preferred.
  • California Driver’s License may be required depending on assignment.
  • All required certifications must be maintained as a condition of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

  • Lifeguarding principles, water rescue techniques, and surveillance methods.
  • Emergency response and first aid procedures.
  • Pool operations, equipment use, and sanitation standards.
  • Customer service and communication practices.
  • Instructional methods for swim lessons (Levels II/III).

Skills/Ability To

  • Maintain vigilant surveillance and quick reaction capability.
  • Respond effectively and decisively in emergencies.
  • Lead swim lessons independently (Levels II/III).
  • Conduct trainings and coach staff (Level III).
  • Work effectively with diverse patrons and team members.
  • Communicate professionally and clearly.
