General Statement Of Duties
Administration and enforcement of the Zoning Ordinance of the City of Canton.
Distinguishing Features Of The Class
It is the Zoning Inspector's duty to administer and enforce the provision of the zoning ordinance as adopted and amended. He/she has no power to make any special exception or grant any variance from the letter of the zoning ordinance. He/she works under the supervision of the Director of Public Safety or his/her designee.
Examples Of Work
Advises the general public on proper procedure for applying for zone changes, supplies information to the general public on the types of land uses permitted in the various zoning districts, orders discontinuances of illegal uses of land or building, reviews all applications submitted for zoning permits and Certificates of Occupancy, keeps permanent records of all application, permits issued or denied, zone changes and legal non-conforming uses, and makes such inspections as are necessary to carry out the enforcement of the Zoning Ordinance.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, statues, administrative procedure, policies, and regulations governing or bearing on land use control and development. Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of urban long-range planning. Ability to deal effectively with developers and the general public in highly controversial land use and zoning requests and appeals. ALL APPLICANTS MUST PASS A WRITTEN SKILLS ASSESSMENT TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION.
Acceptable Experience And Training
A bachelor's degree, preferably in urban planning, architecture, civil engineering, public administration, political science, economics or sociology; or five years experience in any of the above; or an acceptable combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. ICC Zoning Code Certification required within 12 months of hire or transfer into position. Computer literacy in Microsoft Office software; and skills in the application of ESRI GIS experience highly desired. Valid State Driver's License desired.

REPEATING AN EXAM
Per OAC Rule 123: 1-9-01, an applicant who has competed in a civil service examination cannot repeat that examination or take an examination for the same classification within FOUR MONTHS from the date of original examination, unless an alternative form of examination is given, or unless other standards are specified in the examination announcement.
RATING
Your name will be placed on a list of eligible candidates upon receiving a passing score. Once the list has been established, your name will remain on the list for a period of one (1) year.
As provided in ORC 124.23C, any person who has completed service in the uniformed services, who have been honorably discharged from the uniformed services or transferred to the reserve with evidence of satisfactory service, and who is an Ohio resident and any member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who has completed more than 180 days of active duty service pursuant to an executive order of the President of the United States or an act of Congress of the United States may file with the director a certificate of service or honorable discharge (DD-214 – Long version), and upon this filing, the person shall receive an additional credit of twenty percent (20%) of the person’s total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.
A member in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the member’s initial entry-level training shall receive a credit of fifteen percent (15%) of the person’s total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.

Pursuant to Civil Service Rules applicants are hereby advised that the position of employment being examined for is subject to a drug test. Accordingly, eligibility is not considered final until drug testing has been successfully completed with a negative result.
