What are the responsibilities and job description for the Street Maintenance Worker II position at City of Cameron?
Purpose of Position
The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment used for Public Works maintenance/construction and perform a variety of skilled to unskilled Public Works maintenance, repair and construction tasks. The work is performed under the direction of the Street Superintendent.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Operates equipment, including but not limited to, motor grader, loaders, backhoes, skid-steerer, tractors, bucket trucks, trucks, street sweeper and snow removal equipment.
- Pours and finishes concrete and makes forms.
- Provides dirt work for demolition and preparation of sites.
- Installs new drop boxes and storm sewers; installs and repairs storm sewer pipe.
- Installs curbs and gutters, repairs sections of concrete and asphalt streets, repairs, builds, and replaces sidewalks and walking trails.
- Completes carpentry projects as assigned.
- Performs routine preventive maintenance and repair to equipment and vehicles; monitors equipment operation and reports malfunctions; inspects equipment for safety hazards.
- Removes and trim brush and trees and plants trees.
- Operates jack hammer, cutting torch, welder and other equipment used in maintenance, repair and construction.
- Plows snow on all City streets, and removes snow on designated sidewalks and park areas.
- Repairs and installs new signs; repairs and replaces fencing; assists with community beautification, parade, and festivals.
- Performs custodial tasks.
Additional Tasks and Responsibilities
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.
- Performs grounds maintenance/clean-up work.
- Assists other departments as needed or directed by the Public Works Director.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education or Experience Required
High school diploma or G.E.D or Associate’s degree or equivalent; or two to three years related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Construction and heavy equipment experience.
Preferred Education or Experience Required
Four to five years related experience and/or training or bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Other Requirements – Certificates/Licensures
- Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, blueprints and layouts, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to classify, compute and tabulate data and information, following a prescribed plan requiring the exercise of some judgment. Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure and sort information. Ability to assemble, copy, record and transcribe data and information.
- Ability to advise and provide interpretation to others how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
- Ability to utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information such as safety regulations, equipment maintenance records, maps, construction sheets, and equipment operating and maintenance manuals.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing with department personnel and work-release inmates.
- Ability to use functional reasoning in performing influence functions such as leading and controlling.
- Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory and/or judgmental criteria, as opposed to criteria, which are clearly measurable.
- Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments, such as backhoe, motor grader, skid-steerer, jack hammer, power saws, dump truck, snow removal equipment, generator, mechanic’s tools, mowers, tractors, bucket truck, carpenter’s tools, garden tools, survey laser, calculator and drafting instruments. Ability to repair complex equipment and machinery.
- Ability to pass drug screening.
- Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
