The Solid Waste Division (formerly known as the Sanitation Division) provides weekly curbside collection of household garbage, yard waste collection, and bulk waste collection.
What you will do:
This position involves supervising one of the two operations within the Solid Waste Division, assisting the Solid Waste Superintendent and another supervisor with trash collection, disposal, and recycling. The role emphasizes field operations, including driving routes, overseeing crews, addressing field complaints, and assisting with performance evaluations, hiring, and training. Responsibilities also include developing operational plans for residential and commercial refuse collection, managing equipment, assigning work orders, and ensuring tasks are completed on time and meet industry standards. Additionally, the employee serves as a technical resource for shop mechanics in equipment repair and maintenance.
Expected Hiring Range: $52,512-$55,138. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications. A starting salary above the range listed may be considered for highly qualified individuals not to exceed the maximum of the grade.Leadership & Supervision:
- Plans, schedules, and assigns work orders to Equipment Operators, Maintenance Workers, and other Solid Waste Crew members.
- Operates sanitation equipment and vehicles as an on-site supervisor/crew leader, ensuring smooth operation and team coordination.
- Acts as a senior-level Equipment Operator and may serve as the acting Sanitation Services Superintendent in their absence.
- Utilizes considerable practical knowledge of solid waste equipment and operations to troubleshoot issues, providing valuable operational feedback to maintenance shop personnel.
- Assists in preparing route operation reports and informs management of field situations that could affect community quality of life.
- Participates in the evaluation of Sanitation Crew members’ performance, preparing performance reports and offering guidance on career development and available training resources.
- Coordinates leave requests and advises the Sanitation Services Superintendent on employee hiring, promotion, or disciplinary matters.
- Collaborates with the Superintendent to develop and deliver on-the-job training programs for Crew members, focusing on solid waste, trash, and debris collection operations.
- Works closely with department and division management to keep them informed of any field situations that could impact community services.
- Assists with other duties as required, ensuring smooth operations across all aspects of the division.
- Possesses considerable technical knowledge of solid waste, trash, and debris collection practices, including the operation of manual and automated vehicles and specialized equipment.
- Well-versed in current methods, terminology, vehicles, equipment, tools, and materials used in solid waste collection operations.
- Demonstrates an in-depth understanding of city policies impacting the Sanitation Services Division.
- Skilled in planning, organizing, training, supervising, and evaluating the work of staff members.
- Capable of providing leadership, offering praise, and implementing progressive discipline as needed.
- Ability to assess crew performance and estimate the time required to complete tasks efficiently.
- Able to follow and communicate both oral and written instructions effectively.
- Proficient in creating and maintaining accurate records, including work orders and other essential documentation.
- Strong ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with city employees, customers, and the general public.
- Associate's degree in a related field and five years of related experience in solid waste services for a municipality including experience at the senior or lead level. OR An equivalent combination of education and supervisory experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation
