What You Will Do
The City of Burlington’s Recreation & Parks Department is seeking a highly motivated student with an interest in Recreation, Senior Citizens, and/or Individuals with Developmental Disabilities to serve as its Spring Intern. The purpose of this position is to expose the intern to aspects of local government, particularly Recreation, and to provide a diverse learning experience through multiple populations. The intern will work under the supervision of the Senior Center and Therapeutic Recreation Director, who is a licensed and certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.
Anticipated Internship Length (based on educational requirements): January-May 2025

- Program Development and Coordination:
- Support the planning and execution of senior center programs, activities, special events, and trips.
- Contribute to the organization and implementation of the Alamance/Burlington Senior Games.
- Assist with the development and delivery of Specialized Recreation programs, including Camp Green Leaves.
- Diverse Work Assignments:
- Conduct research, perform analysis, and complete varied tasks to support departmental goals.
- Participate in job shadowing opportunities and attend meetings and training sessions.
- Customer Engagement:
- Provide exceptional customer service to participants, staff, and partnering agencies.
- Communication Excellence:
- Utilize strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to foster effective collaboration and engagement.
- The ideal candidate will be enrolled in a Recreation Administration, Social Work or Therapeutic Recreation program or relevant undergraduate course of study with a strong interest in working with seniors or individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Proof of or ability to complete First Aid and CPR/AED certification
