Sustainability Coordinator

General Position Summary

This position is responsible for supporting the Sustainability Manager in the development, management and implementation of the City's sustainability strategies and policies, including the Climate Action Plan and the administration of the City's solid waste contract. The Sustainability Coordinator supports a range of projects to further sustainability programs including projects to address stormwater, energy, water conservation, green buildings, solid waste, emergency management, and air quality. The Sustainability Coordinator also supports compliance with the NPDES Permit requirements where necessary.

Essential Functions

• Assists departments in securing grants to improve or implement sustainability programs.
• Coordinates and promotes events and activities to educate and engage with community members. Provides planning and logistical support.
• Creates a variety of communications materials for use in social media, traditional media, digital, print, and other channels, as appropriate. Writes communication materials including press releases, email, social media, and advertising campaigns.
• Develops and executes educational and outreach programs for environmentally focused policies in the city, including stormwater, water quality and watershed health.
• Facilitates the interdepartmental Climate Action Team.
• Maintains effective relations with the public, community leaders, local school district, civic organizations, businesses, community groups, and other government agencies.
• Manages the development, implementation, and monitoring of government policies, programs, and initiatives that promote local sustainability.
• Serves as support for annual interjurisdictional StormFest event.
• Serves as a point of contact on sustainability issues with community and interest groups.
• Supports and models the identified vision, values, and behaviors of the organization.
• Supports the implementation of the Burien Climate Action Plan.
• Supports monitoring, benchmarking, and evaluating the impacts of the Burien Climate Action Plan.
• Supports drafting and reviewing of policy and code development related to environmental, energy, economic, and social sustainability initiatives.
• Supports the City's Emergency Management programs.
• Supervises volunteers as assigned.

Secondary Functions

• Prepare specifications and develop requests for proposals (RFPs) for public/private projects; analyze responses and make recommendations on proposals.
• Serves on and participates in various internal and external committees as assigned.
• Supports community outreach projects across all City departments.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

Two years college level coursework in environmental science, engineering, urban planning, education, urban design, or related field AND two years of work experience in stormwater management, an environmental science, or education or a combination of education, training and experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the position.

Job Conditions

Work is primarily performed in an office environment with extensive work at a desktop computer with some time spent in the field. Flexible work schedule as required periodically.

Salary : $37 - $45
