What are the responsibilities and job description for the SUMMER LIFEGUARD (SEASONAL) position at City of Buffalo?
Incumbents to this position perform routine patrol work at a swimming pool looking after the safety and welfare of the swimmers. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Supervising Lifeguard, however, there is considerable responsibility for the exercise of sound judgment in emergencies.Stands watch or patrols swimming pool keeping bathers within bounds and going to their aid when they are in difficulty;
Applies resuscitation techniques and otherwise renders first aid;
Instructs beginners in swimming and life saving;
Keeps the pool free of debris and operates chlorinator and sanitation system;
Performs other routine duties such as maintaining order and compliance with pool rules.Must possess the following current certificates at time of appointment:
1. Advanced Lifesaving and Water Safety OR Lifeguard Training
2. Basic Life Support Course in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation-Course C or above (ie., Advanced First Aid, etc.)
FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of first aid, lifesaving and rescue work as applied to accidents in the water;
Ability to swim well;
Ability to deal with the public and to secure cooperation without antagonism;
Ability to keep records and make simple reports and arithmetic computations;
Good observation;
Mental alertness;
Good moral character;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

PLEASE NOTE: NO RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT-SUMMER LIFEGUARDS: Due to the nationwide lifeguard shortage, residency is NOT a requirement for the seasonal lifeguard position in the City of Buffalo. Applicants from any nearby municipality are encouraged to apply.
