The Senior Clerk is considered a working supervisor responsible for supervising a clerical staff engaged in the routine processing, recording, maintenance and reviewing of applications, licenses and permits. Incumbents perform the more difficult clerical assignments requiring a higher level of knowledge of specific unit functions. Work involves the performance of varied and more difficult clerical assignments, which requires the exercise of independent judgment and general understanding of specific laws, office rules, procedures and policies. A Senior Clerk performs varied work and may receive detailed instructions at the beginning of each assignment, while those responsible for carrying out steps in a prescribed routine may receive only infrequent general instructions. In either case, unusual problems or situations not previously encountered are referred to superiors before action is taken. The duties of a Senior Clerk are more complex and responsible than those of a Clerk, however, they are not as difficult or complex as those performed by a Principal Clerk. Work is checked by an immediate supervisor or by another step in the clerical process. Supervision is exercised over one or more clerical personnel.Assigns, reviews and records completed work and instructs new employees in the specialized clerical work of a unit;
Conducts correspondence on matters where policies and procedures are well defined;
Checks reports, records and computer printouts for clerical accuracy and completeness;
Processes, checks, codes and files requisitions, vouchers, bills, receipts and other documents and materials;
Collects and compiles statistics and related information for records/reports;
Supervises and/or performs recording, checking and issuance of applications, licenses and permits;
-collects fees and accounts for monies received;
-reconciles balances with City Treasurers Office;
Processes, sorts, indexes, records and files a variety of control records and reports;
Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports;
Inputs, maintains and updates records using CRT terminal, personal computer, word processor;
Answers telephones and takes messages;
-gives out general information relative to office rules, policies and procedures;
May act as a receptionist, directing callers to the proper source of information;
May assist in the retrieval of data in a computer terminal;
May operate copy machines, simple computing and other office machines;

Continuous and permanent status in any city department for one year as an Account Clerk, Account Clerk-Typist, Administrative Aide, Clerk, Data Control Clerk, Junior Data Control Clerk, Junior Traffic Clerk, Stenographer or Typist.
NOTE: Candidates will only be allowed to participate in an exam and be approved or certified for appointment to departments where the rate of pay for Senior Clerk is at a higher rate of pay than their current position, even if their title is listed above.
