General Purpose

Performs administrative, supervisory and professional work in the operation and maintenance of a safe swimming pool, department sponsored programs, classes and activities. Development of well rounded, year round instructional programs.

Supervision Received

Works under the immediate supervision of the Recreation Superintendent and the general supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director.

Supervision Exercised

Supervises part-time recreation staff, life guards, instructors, volunteers, and others as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Manages and supervises assigned operations to achieve goals within available resources; plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments; trains, motivates and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed.

Provides leadership and direction in the development of short and long range plans; gathers, interprets, and prepares data for studies, reports and recommendations; coordinates department activities with other departments and agencies as needed.

Communicates official plans, policies and procedures to staff, the general public, and the American Red Cross.

Assures that assigned area of responsibility are performed within budget; performs cost control activities; monitors revenues and expenditures in assigned area to assure sound fiscal control; assists in preparing annual budget requests; assures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities, and time.

Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites workflow; studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.

Assists in the preparation of information for the Recreation Center program brochure.

Issues written and oral instructions; assigns duties.

Promotes interest and provides information regarding aquatics programs.

Implements Learn to Swim and aquatic exercise programs.

Coordinates staff in the development and implementation of aquatics programs. Ensures all paperwork is completed by staff (i.e., accident, incident reports, chemical readings, checklists, sign in sheets, etc.)

Directs the patrolling of the pool and the enforcement of safety rules and regulations.

Performs maintenance of the swimming pool. Monitors and maintains pool filtration system. Monitors pool water chemistry through testing of water samples. Adjusts chemistry as needed to maintain standards.

Test and record operational data including water chemistry, vacuum pools, clean pool decks, equipment, pump and filter room.

Maintains swimming pool and aquatic records and reports.

Peripheral Duties

Assists in supervising recreation special events.

Assists Recreation Superintendent and other management staff in the general supervision and operation procedures of the Recreation Center.

Employee may be asked to perform other duties based on the business needs of the City.

The employee may be asked to work holidays.

Desired Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

College Degree in Parks and Recreation or related field with pool management experience and certification as American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer, American Red Cross.

Lifeguard Instructor and Certified Pool Operator. OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to effectively teach swimming lessons; Ability to effectively enforce safety and health regulations relating to an aquatics program; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors and the general public; Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; Ability to give and understand oral instructions; Ability to be part of a cohesive recreation team; Ability to develop, promote, coordinate and direct aquatic programs to support area; Ability to work with, supervise and direct people. Must be dependable with the ability to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings as necessary and scheduled.

Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment; Skill in First Aid and CPR.

Thorough knowledge of modern pool operations.

Special Requirements

First Aid and CPR certification; Water Safety Instructor’s Certificate (WSI); Lifeguard Certificate. Must possess a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) equivalent certification within ninety (90) days of hiring. Must possess a valid State of Ohio driver’s license.

Tools and Equipment Used

Various hand tools used in the maintenance of swimming pool equipment; pool testing equipment; telephone; calculator; copy machine; fax machine; computer including word processing software and spreadsheets.

The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl or smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, dangerous toxic or caustic hazardous chemicals, dirt, odors, high or low temperatures, and confined spaces.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, and moderately loud when in the field. The position may also require travel for the purpose of attending training workshops.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $15.41 - $31.51 per hour
