Job Summary

Under the Supervision of the Recreation Community Inclusion Coordinator, the Recreation Leader Supervisor will perform duties pertaining to the operations of the Recreation Programs and working with vulnerable populations, including the safety and welfare of children 5 yrs. to 17 years of age. Monitoring of staff hours, oversight of programming and scheduled activities as well as ensuring the safety of participants and the public. An employee of this class may be required to perform a variety of administrative and record keeping duties and have extensive public contact. They may also be required to do some janitorial work, set up and take down related to the operation of the Recreation Programs.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills

  • Engages children in interactive activities including organized arts & crafts, singing, sports activities, games, and field trips.
  • Ensures staff are engaged, always interacting with campers, and building a positive relationship with campers.
  • Coordinates staff schedules, daily activity schedule and field trips according to PARD (Parks and Recreation Department) policies.
  • Provides assistance and recommendations for training and performance feedback of staff to Recreation community Inclusion Coordinator.
  • Renders routine first aid for minor injuries.
  • Attends mandatory weekly meetings.
  • Assures that all equipment and facilities are safely and properly prepared and maintained.
  • Keeps work environment clean and organized.
  • Average skills; knowledge of commonly used work routines, rules, procedures, or operations; ability to use specialized equipment.
  • Facilitate the movement of a group toward a common goal in a fun and inspirational way.
  • Ability to generate ideas quickly, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others and entertaining others.
  • Facilitate learning skills through fun and action, a person-centered approach, handle difficulties with others effectively, encourage, praise, and recognize successes, and adapt or modify for different skill sets and ability levels.

Minimum Education & Experience

High school graduation or GED
One (1) yr. experience in sports and recreation activities.
Must have background on the basics of sports and recreation activities.
Must be at least eighteen (18) years old and be able to work an open schedule.

Special Certifications & Licenses

Valid Texas Driver’s License
American Red Cross First Aid and Safety Community CPR or CPR for the Professional.

Independence & Judgement

Average judgement; must recognize and resolve problems such type of procedure to apply, where to refer call or correspondence without specified destination; may involve freedom in selection of work methods among approved routines, setting of priorities, or sequencing of tasks within established schedules.

Initiative & Ingenuity

General guidelines: occasionally requires interpretation of available options to apply to non-standard situations; day-to-day work drives priorities

Supervisory & Responsibility

Lead person in small work group; does not specifically assign work but is looked to for guidance.

Financial Responsibility

Does not deal with money.

Level & Frequency of Outside Contact

Frequent contact with the public or other organizations; interactions may require obtaining cooperation of people; courtesy and tact are required when dealing with moderately difficult or sensitive issues.

Physical Demands

Light physical effort such as standing, lifting, moving, pulling, pushing, etc. Ability to exert up to 20lbs. of force occasionally to move objects.

Responsibility for Equipment & Property

Responsible for use of equipment/property such as office equipment, supplies, etc., which are used in office. Use of City Vehicle.

Working Conditions

Fair inside or outside conditions; exposure to disagreeable conditions is brief or otherwise insignificant; space problems; only occasional situations that place the employee in a stressful environment.

Other Requirements

The City of Brownsville requires all employees to successfully pass a Drug & Alcohol and a physical examination and a Background Check.
