What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard position at City of Brooklyn Center?
The City of Brooklyn Center is looking to fill 10 part-time lifeguard positions for the Community Pool.
The primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of the patrons at the Brooklyn Center Community Center pool.
The Community Center is open 7 days a week. Summer hours are 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and school year hours are 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. We are looking for candidates that can work evenings and weekends. Lifeguards will be required to be available to cover two weekend shifts per month based on business needs for public safety.
- Prevention of and quick response to any emergencies
- Maintain safety of all individuals in the pool area (including locker rooms, exercise room and sauna)
- Maintain a positive, helpful attitude with all building staff and public
- Maintain an appropriate and professional appearance at all times
- Maintain an appropriate level of fitness
- Enforce and follow all facility policies, rules and regulations
- Inspect the facility on a daily basis and report unsafe conditions and equipment to supervisors
- Remain current in all certifications
- Complete all records and reports in a timely manner
- Participate in all staff meetings
- Perform daily operational tasks
- Work all assigned shifts or find an approved substitute
- Comply with Minnesota Department of Health standards, practices and requirements for public pool safety and regulations mandated by local, state and federal agencies
- Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Training
- American Red Cross Standard First Aid
- American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer
- Must be at least 15 years old
Communications
Must be customer service oriented and have the ability to actively listen to others for understanding of their needs and situations; ability to speak and write English clearly. Must be able to assertively control conversations in order to quickly and accurately gather pertinent information and be able to communicate this information professionally and precisely to the proper recipient. Be able to read and understand correspondence, memoranda, and directives.

Technical Knowledge
Must have all appropriate certifications in regard to lifeguarding and must be able to perform those duties. Must have the ability to work with diverse groups.
Physical Abilities
Must have the ability to read and discern visual images on a variety of media. Must have the ability to remain seated or standing at the same workstation for up to eight hours at a time with appropriate breaks within that time frame.
