What are the responsibilities and job description for the WWTP FOG Compliance Treatment Plant Operator position at City of Brevard?
The City of Brevard is looking to hire a FOG Compliance Treatment Plant Operator to join our team. This position is responsible for monitoring and regulating fats, oils and grease (FOG) generating facilities to protect the City of Brevard’s wastewater collection system and Treatment plant. This position administers the City’s FOG policy by conducting inspections, ensuring compliance with the Sewer Use Ordinance and providing outreach and education to local businesses. The role involves regular field inspections, compliance monitoring, enforcement actions, and coordination with businesses such as food service establishments, automotive facilities, and other local businesses. The FOG Compliance Treatment Plant Operator also assists with industrial, laboratory, and operational duties within the wastewater treatment system and works under general supervision of the WWTP ORC.
- Ensure compliance with the City of Brevard’s F.O.G. Policy and Sewer Use Ordinance for food service, automotive, and other local businesses.
- Conducts regular inspections and re-inspections of Food Service Establishments (FSEs), automotive facilities, and other local businesses to ensure compliance with the City’s FOG Policy and Sewer Use Ordinance.
- Enter inspection data into spreadsheets using Excel, update facility information, complete required paperwork, and send and receive emails using Office 365.
- Investigate sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) and irregular or prohibited discharges to the City’s collection system.
- Conduct enforcement actions for noncompliance, including issuing Notices of Service (NOS) and Notices of Violation (NOV), and assessing fines or penalties as appropriate.
- Provides education and technical assistance to business owners and operators regarding grease management best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Responds to system emergencies or spills that may impact the wastewater collection or treatment process.
- Assists with industrial pretreatment inspections, laboratory sampling, and general wastewater treatment plant operational duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma and some experience in regulatory inspections,preferably in a water or wastewater treatment plant; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- For applicants with existing NC Wastewater Certifications,classification and pay will be based on certification and experience levels.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Possession of a Pretreatment Grade 1 Certification from the North Carolina Pretreatment Certification board or the ability to obtain the certification within one year of employment.
- Possession of a North Carolina Wastewater Operator's Grade Certificate or the ability to obtain the certification within 12 months hiredate.
- Working knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of water and/or wastewater treatment plants.
- Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and permitting requirements.
- Working knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions.
- Some knowledge of standard laboratory tests and procedures used in a water or wastewater treatment plant and of chemistry and mathematics.
- Working knowledge of the use of technology to record data, prepare reports, maintain program files and records in accordance with State requirements.
- Some knowledge of plumbing, hydraulics, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to water or wastewater treatment plant operations.
- Ability to enforce City policies related to the Sewer Use Ordinance and ensure compliance, take corrective actions and issue notices of violations (NOVs).
- Ability to operate and use a variety of tools and equipment required for maintenance.
- Ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures.
- Ability to conduct routine laboratory tests.
- Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read meters, charts, and technical manuals and drawings accurately and to maintain records of inspections in an organized manner.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with business owners, customers, peers and superiors.
