Position Summary
This position is responsible for performing manual labor and semi-skilled work in a variety of tasks related to public works, sanitation, and general maintenance activities.
Work Schedule: Full Time - Primarily weekdays; evenings and weekends dependent upon programs and special events. On call 24/7 for emergencies related to Public Works and city property.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties, responsibilities and expectations are not necessarily limited to the following and are not enumerated in any particular order or priority. At any particular time the frequency or duration with which one or more of the following specific duties is performed may vary widely.
1. Picks up and hauls trash and debris from assigned areas and assists sanitation department as needed.
2. Fills in potholes and cracks in city streets; assists in repairing and replacing pavement, curbs, and sidewalks; assists in the maintenance and repairs to traffic signs and pavement markings.
3. Operates trucks with equipment, including but not limited to, snowplow, salt spreader, dump truck, and other motorized equipment on an assigned basis.
4. Maintains city owned facilities, performs semi-skilled plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and masonry work.
5. Paints city owned facilities including buildings, pavement, and the like.
6. Assists in the servicing and minor repair of city vehicles and equipment. Maintains tools in proper working conditions; maintains proper level of supplies; and maintains city owned facilities.
7. Performs other duties as assigned, including but not limited to, preparation of special events and such.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
· Some knowledge of tools, materials, methods and best practices for street maintenance and repair; vehicle repair and maintenance.
· Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods under normal and adverse weather conditions. Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
· Knowledge of best practices regarding public works safety and quality.
· Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish effective working relationships with fellow employees.
Minimum Requirements – Education, Certification, and Experience
1. Graduation from a general or technical high school, preferably including or supplemented by vocational courses, and some experience in the performance of manual labor or semi-skilled maintenance and repair work, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
2. Must have a current Class B CDL with air brake endorsement required or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment required.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
1. Must frequently refine existing work methods and develop new techniques, concepts or programs within established limits or policies
2. Must lift objects (greater than 50 pounds) as a requirement of the job.
3. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid driver’s license.
