Position Summary

The Bozeman Fire Department is now accepting applications for a Battalion Chief of Support Services who will serve as the department accreditation manager, oversee the design and delivery of firefighter recruit academies, and maintain and update the department’s development plan, and track staff certification, assists with the maintenance of the department’s strategic plan and budget.

Work Week: Typically Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
  • Oversees the design and delivery of the department shift and company level training, including the annual training calendar;
  • Oversees the design and delivery of the department firefighter recruit academies;
  • Maintains and updates the department professional development plan;
  • Tracks department staff certifications and expiration dates, ensuring that staff have the appropriate certifications and re-certifications as required;
  • Serves as the department accreditation manager, maintaining the department community risk assessment/standards of cover (CRA/SOC), and fire and emergency services self-assessment (FESSAM), and other required documents and reports;
  • Ensures annual accreditation compliance reports are submitted to the accrediting body;
  • Manages staff performance including supervision of assigned staff; approves time-off requests and approve subordinate employee timesheets; participates in the selection, promotion, discipline, and termination of staff and recommends candidates for hiring; schedules, trains, motivates and evaluates assigned staff;
  • Establishes and/or assumes command and management of incident scenes as defined by department policy;
  • Monitors, administers, and assists in the development of department SOP/SOG;
  • Monitors and administers the records management system;
  • Monitors and administers the department data analytics system, making recommendations on department deployment and response;
  • Assist in the maintenance and updating of the fire department strategic plan;
  • Serves as the Program Manager for department programs such as Hazmat, Technical Rescue, and EMS, as assigned;
  • Ensures compliance with the Exposure Control Plan;
  • Assists the Fire Chief and Deputy Chiefs in the development of the annual budget;
  • Monitors and exercises authority for expenditures that affect the department budget and assigned programs;
  • Assists with the development and coordination of special projects and events;
  • May be required to perform fire-fighting activities during emergency situations or as needed;
  • Reports occupational injuries, illnesses, exposures and near misses immediately to the Human Resources Department. Follows supervisor instructions for obtaining first aid and/or medical attention. Participates in accident investigations as requested;
  • Participates fully in safety training, including suggesting improvements for safety training requirements or programs to the Human Resources Department and Fire Chief;
  • Identifies unsafe work conditions and work practices, correcting hazards or reporting them to the Human Resources Department and Fire Chief;
  • May provide needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other duties and undertakes other projects consistent with the role and function of the classification, as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or Public Administration is preferred; and
  • Eight (8) years as a full-time career firefighter, two (2) of which must be at or above the level of officer;
  • Montana or NREMT-Basic or equivalent required.
  • Preferred certification and training:
    • Incident Command System 400 Certification;
    • IFSAC / Pro-Board Fire Officer II;
    • IFSAC / Pro-Board Fire Instructor II;
    • CPSE Fire Officer Designation;
    • Blue Card Incident Command Certification;
    • IFSAC/ProBoard Incident Safety Officer
    • CPSE Peer Assessor

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must possess a valid Montana Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
  • Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory response to appropriate post conditional offer process.

Required Special Qualifications

  • Substantial knowledge of the principles and practices of department administration and fire science;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Hazardous materials, hazard mitigation, and disaster management;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of local, State and Federal laws, rules, ordinances, and regulations, as it relates to assigned area of responsibility;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, adopted fire codes, and EPA rules and regulations;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of or ability to quickly learn department and City policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and City enforced fire codes;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of or ability to quickly learn current policies, practices, and standard operating procedures relative to assigned area of responsibility, and their application to a wide variety of public safety services and programs;
  • Ability to effectively direct and supervise subordinates;
  • Ability to effectively lead, motivate, and supervise the work of others;
  • Ability to effectively resolve employee problems in a fair and diplomatic manner;
  • Ability to efficiently and safely operate vehicle and equipment related to functional area of assignment;
  • Ability to perform firefighting activities during emergency situations or as needed;
  • Ability to use good judgment;
  • Ability to recommend and implement goals, objectives, and practice for providing effective and efficient public safety services;
  • Ability to stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of public safety;
  • Ability to effectively provide public safety services in assigned areas of responsibility;
  • Ability to effectively act as an Incident Commander, or as a member of an incident team;
  • Ability to effectively organize work, maintain organizational structure, and delegate authority;
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and related devices using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability to make appropriate budget recommendations;
  • Ability to prepare accurate and reliable reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations;
  • Quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Demonstrate ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;
