What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heavy Equipment Operator position at City of Boca Raton?
Performs skilled and responsible work in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy and complex automotive, construction and T.V. equipment (television inspection equipment) associated with the maintenance, repair, and operation of the City’s sidewalk, stormwater, canal, and roadway infrastructure; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate operators and maintenance workers.
- Operates a variety of heavy equipment including, but not limited to: excavators, backhoes, loaders, bulldozers, rollers paver, vacuum trucks and T.V. trucks.
- Loads and unloads heavy equipment.
- Views sewer lines on closed circuit video equipment.
- Performs maintenance and repairs on public infrastructure, including sidewalks, curbs, roadways, storm drains, swales, culverts, and canal systems.
- Assists in the clearing, cleaning and vegetation management of canals and stormwater systems.
- Participates in concrete work such as forming, pouring, and finishing sidewalks and driveways.
- Responds to and resolves emergency situations, including flooding, roadway obstructions, and storm-related damage.
- When not operating heavy equipment, operates lighter equipment or trains other operators; Supervises subordinate workers and operators assisting in the work.
Related tasks:
- Fabricates and welds new equipment parts and repairs existing parts.
- Operates high pressure sewer cleaner; Locates and orders repair parts.
- Performs construction, maintenance, and repair duties when not operating equipment.
- Services and makes repairs and adjustments on equipment.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge of:
- Strong understanding of the principles and practices of operating and maintaining heavy construction equipment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
- Solid understanding of occupational hazards and required safety precautions for the proper operation of various construction and maintenance equipment.
- Familiarity with the operation of closed-circuit video equipment and high-pressure sewer cleaning equipment.
Skilled in:
- Operating equipment assigned for the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of utility service lines and appurtenances.
Ability to:
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions; demonstrate mechanical aptitude.
- Perform minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
- Lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers.
- Climb ladders and scaffolds and pull and operate a fire hose.
- Use hand tools such as a shovel, sledgehammer, and air hammer.
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and
- Five (5) years of experience in operation, maintenance and repair of heavy motorized equipment, drainage systems, sidewalk and roadway.
- Possession of valid State of Florida Class "A" CDL driver's license with no more than six (6) points in a three (3) year period.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- "N" (Tanker) endorsement is preferred or must be able to attain within six (6) months of date of hire, if required by the Department Director at time of employment.
