7:00am - 5:00pm 


GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB:
 
This position performs responsible semi-skilled work performing a variety of tasks in connection with the City's dredging operation. Under supervision of the Dredge Operator, responsibilities include the preparation, repair, and maintenance of all dredge equipment and vessels. Work involves considerable exposure to the natural elements and includes manual work.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 
  • Checks and prepares tugboat, barge, and dredge for dredging operations;
  • Communicates with Dredge Captain, and Dredge Operator to coordinate dredge movements;
  • Completes mandatory daily boat maintenance Log/Checklist, to meet State permit requirements;
  • Comply with standard operating procedures, safety practices, rules, and regulations while performing job duties;
  • Washes and maintains vessels and equipment in proper working order;
  • Keep work areas clean and organized;
  • Loads and unloads materials from vessels/barges and docks/trucks;
  • Performs maintenance on equipment including de-rusting and painting;
  • Performs repairs and makes additions to pipes and lines;
  • Maintains the overall appearance of the vessel ensuring that proper storage and housekeeping are observed;
  • Cleans deck of the vessel regularly and maintains equipment exposed to outside elements that cause deterioration;
  • Keeps deck clear of obstructions of any type that may cause slips, falls, or that otherwise may be a safety hazard;
  • Serves in the capacity of lookout or watch during operations, or maneuvering;
  • Participates in safety and environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance with State/Federal regulations and improve existing City programs;
  • Enters water to perform regular maintenance and repairs on pipes, vessels, and equipment;
  • Assists Street Maintenance and Stormwater divisions when required.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
 
  • Knowledge of the maintenance, repair, and manual tasks involved in dredging operations;
  • Knowledge in the use of common and specialized tools required in the work; 
  • Knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of dredging equipment; 
  • Ability to swim;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, maintain good working relationships, and exercise initiative and sound judgment;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions;
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under adverse work conditions.

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • High school diploma or equivalent required;
  • Two (2) years of experience as a semiskilled worker in marine vessel maintenance and repair or construction activity required;
  • Possession of a valid State of Florida Class “E” driver's license is required.
  • Abstained from the use of cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products for at least one (1) year prior to date of hire, and shall abstain from the use of tobacco products at all times during the period of their employment with the City while both on and off duty.
 
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS OR CONDITIONS:
 
The environmental conditions and physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required, weekly or up to daily, to:
 
  • Must be able to swim;
  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like;
  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces;
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods;
  • Moving about within the immediate area to accomplish tasks;
  • Moving from one worksite to another;
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 50 pounds in all directions;
  • Communicating with others to exchange information;
  • Repeating motions that may include wrists, hands, or fingers;
  • Operating a computer and other equipment using motions requires manual dexterity or fine motor skills;
  • Operating machinery and/or power tools;
  • Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment;
  • Assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned; 
  • Ability to observe details accurately and identify variances;
  • Lift/Carry objects 50 pounds or less;
  • Push/Pull objects 50 pounds or less;
  • Working in an area that is somewhat uncomfortable due to drafts, noise, temperature variation of the like;
  • Working in an area that is very uncomfortable due to extreme temperature, noise levels, or other environmental conditions.
  • Working in an outdoor area where exposure to animals, reptiles and/or insects may occur;
  • Working with equipment or performing procedures where carelessness would probably result in minor cuts, bruises, or muscle pulls.
 
ESSENTIAL EMPLOYEE DESIGNATION:
 
When normal operations of City departments are suspended or interrupted due to a declaration that a state of emergency exists, employees in this classification will be deemed essential by the City. For the preparation and/or continuation of emergency operations or for special work detail, employees deemed necessary shall be required to work.
