JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary

The City of Bluefield Parks and Recreation Department is seeking an ambassador who will increase the engagement and participation of community members and visitors in recreational programming. The individual in this position will be pivotal in propelling the department’s online presence and community engagement. A successful candidate will be interested in pursuing a career in marketing, community event planning, or just wanting to gain experience working on a dynamic team in a professional setting. This position also includes front desk work and staff supervision, performing duties that primarily consist of providing customer service, membership, light upkeep of the FitRec facility, assistance during events and programs, and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Build a robust web presence for the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Bluefield
  • Work in collaboration with partner organizations and local businesses to organize community programming opportunities throughout the year.
  • Collaborate on grant writing initiatives to expand youth and outdoor programming.
  • Create a community asset map to determine the best avenues to spur the outdoor economy in assigned communities.
  • Utilize online marketing and social media engagement to increase local and statewide awareness of and participation in City of Bluefield events.
  • Create engaging and strategic promotional event materials. Responsible for publishing a department brochure three times per year. Will provide timeline for brochure information to designated staff responsible for programs.
  • Be a frontline ambassador for the community members and visitors to the City of Bluefield.
  • Update and maintain online and social media presence, including the Parks & Recreation website, page on the City of Bluefield website, Facebook and Instagram pages, and the brochure.
  • Train front desk staff in all front desk duties.
  • Schedule all front desk staff and coordinate desk coverage always.
  • Perform front desk and membership duties by answering phone calls and emails while providing prompt and courteous customer service.
  • Accurately answer questions and provide tours of the facility and information about programs.
  • Operate computer, reservation, and membership software, point of sale system, cash drawer, and credit card terminal while maintaining an accurate balance sheet.
  • Create and enter invoices.
  • Perform daily deposits and monitor.
  • Assist with programs and special events.
  • Clean and sanitize equipment and bathrooms as needed.
  • Monitor the department’s social media sites to provide quality control and respond to public queries.
  • Create flyers for programs and events.
  • Conduct marketing calls and send letters in support of the Parks & Recreation events, programs, and membership plans.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with other staff members, leaders, volunteers, members, participants, parents, and the public.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident
  • Must be 18 years old or older.
  • High School Diploma or GED (by the start of service)
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check.
  • Must be able to pass drug screening.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Preferred bachelor’s degree (marketing/communications) or equivalent experience. Students are welcome to apply.
  • Website design experience or desire to learn.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Organizational abilities.
  • Proficiency in social media platforms.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Experience with Microsoft applications or ability to learn.
  • Previous experience working in a fitness center is a plus.
  • Previous operating of reservation or membership computer systems is highly desired.
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Must possess CPR, First Aid, and AED certification or be willing to receive certification.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions of supervisor and adhere to company policies and safety guidelines.
  • Must be flexible; willing to work weekend and holiday shifts as necessary in certain circumstances.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time, hourly position, OT eligible. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 4:45 am to 1:15 pm. Other shifts may be required for evenings or weekends.

Rate of Pay

Starting pay is $15.00 per hour with 6-month performance and wage review.
