What are the responsibilities and job description for the Firefighter EMT & Paramedic position at City of Blue Ash, Ohio?
Notice is hereby given that the City of Blue Ash, Ohio, will administer a written exam for the position of Firefighter (EMT & Paramedic). This exam will establish an eligibility list for future vacancies within the full-time Firefighter (EMT & Paramedic) classification.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must currently possess Firefighter 2 Certification and State of Ohio EMT-Basic. A Firefighter EMT-Basic must obtain a Paramedic Certification within three (3) years of appointment to full-time employment and will not be compensated for any education hours outside normal assigned shifts. Current Firefighter/Paramedic who possess Firefighter 2 Certification and State of Ohio Paramedic Certification are eligible and encouraged to apply. Full-time employment experience as a Firefighter/Paramedic will be considered in determining starting salary. Applicants must be able to meet Blue Ash Fire Department physical agility test requirements. SALARY: $71,624.49.40 - $82,234.44 (EMT), $78,560.63 - $90,199.25 (Paramedic)

WRITTEN EXAMINATION: The date of the exam will be Monday, January 6, 2025 or Tuesday, January 7, 2025. Applicants will be contacted by email to self-schedule a date for the exam. Only those applicants meeting the application deadline and meet the minimum qualifications will be allowed entrance to the exam.
EXAMINATION SCORES: The process for Firefighter (EMT & Paramedic) will be comprised of a written exam and will constitute 100% of the total score. Candidates will be required to attain a passing grade of 70% on the examination in order to be placed on the list.
EXTRA CREDIT: Extra credit will be given in the form of additional points added to the final passing grade, calculated by taking:
- 1% of the total grade attainable for each of the first four (4) years of PART-TIME Fire/EMS service with the City of Blue Ash Fire Department, and
- ½% of the total grade attainable for the next (10) ten years of such PART-TIME Fire/EMS service with the City of Blue Ash Fire Department.
No type of seniority credit shall be awarded unless the applicant has achieved a passing score on the written examination.
PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST: Candidates scoring 70% or higher on the written examination will be invited to participate in the physical agility test, tentatively scheduled for Thursday, January 16, 2025 or Friday, January 17, 2025. These dates are subject to change. Applicants will be contacted by email to self-schedule a date for the agility test.EMPLOYMENT OFFER: Subsequent to an offer of employment, and prior to beginning employment, candidates will be subject to a background investigation, polygraph exam, fitness for duty psychological exam, and pre-employment pension physical with drug screening.
An employee in this class responds to calls for EMT & Paramedic services. The Firefighter (EMT) drives the rescue equipment, assists the Firefighter (Paramedic) and provides assistance in firefighting efforts, as well as in efforts to determine the causes of fires. The Firefighter (Paramedic) provides paramedical and medical services at emergency scenes involving injuries, life-threatening situations and deaths. A Firefighter also assists the Fire Chief by performing a variety of routine inspection duties in the functional areas of code enforcement and public safety, inspecting existing residential, commercial, industrial, educational and institutional structures for compliance with all City and related codes, ordinances and programs pertaining to fire prevention and extinguishment, minimum housing standards, crime prevention and the protection of lives and property. The employee also provides a support function by relieving the Fire Chief of record keeping duties and equipment and facility maintenance related to the fire prevention, emergency medical service and extinguishment activities of the City. Also assists the Fire Chief in first aide safety and fire prevention presentation to residential, business, social and institutional groups. Attends meetings and seminars related to emergency medical services, fire prevention and extinguishment.
