Under the supervision of the Center for the Arts Production and Maintenance Superintendent, this position is charged with the operation of theatrical systems during work calls and events. This may include the operation of lighting/electrics, audio, video, and rigging systems. Specific roles on each work call or event will be filled depending on the needs of the production and the skills of the Employee. The Center for the Arts Theater Technician will work cooperatively and cross departmentally with the other crew members, and may interact with a variety of clients to ensure the successful execution of assigned performances and events and ensure the safe use of technical equipment.

  • General Duties (All Technicians):

    • Assist in the overall needs of the work call or event including installation of the orchestra shell, marley flooring, music stands, chairs, platforms, and any other departmental needs that may arise.
    • Provide exceptional customer service, communication, and information for clients and other stakeholders involved in work calls and events.
    • Ensure that all equipment is setup in a safe manner and adheres to professional standards.
    • Notify the appropriate city staff regarding facility maintenance and repair needs.
    • Make minor repairs to theater equipment and provide light custodial work as needed.
    • Enforce policies outlined in Operational Guidelines. Follow up and address safety issues with BCA Superintendent.
    • Actively enforce all theater safety and equipment usage rules. Ensure that aisles and safety striped areas are kept clear.
    • Coordinate the start of show between the performers/client and front of house staff.
    • Take a lead role in emergency procedures during events.
    • Participate in pre-event production meetings.
  • Lighting Focused Duties:

    • During load-ins/setups, technical rehearsals, performances, load-outs and maintenance, the technician may be required to: hang, focus, patch and otherwise install and operate theatrical lighting equipment, practicals and electrical equipment on or about the stage as required for each event or work call.
    • Setup, program, and operate an ETC ION lighting console during load-in, rehearsals, and performances as required for the specific event.
    • Setup and network lighting equipment using DMX and sACN protocols.
    • Wire and connect practical lighting effects using conventional electrical components, LED lighting, DMX encorders, power supplies, and wireless DMX solutions.
    • Ensure that plots are executed and all lighting equipment is setup according to the Lighting Designer’s/ client’s vision and maintained throughout the run of a given production, presentation, event or rental.
    • May also include set up and running of other theatrical equipment, when required, including QLAB and basic audio/video equipment.
  • Audio/Video Focused Duties:

    • During load-ins/setups, technical rehearsals, performances, load-outs and maintenance, the technician may be required to: connect, patch, program, troubleshoot, strike, and otherwise operate theatrical audio and video equipment as required for each event or work call.
    • Patch, program, operate, and manage the audio workflow using a Yamaha CL5, Midas M32R, Qlab, Theater Mix, and Dante networking depending on the needs of the production.
    • Assist musicians and other event stakeholders with load-in and setup of instruments, speakers, microphones, projectors, screens, communication systems, video monitoring, and other staging equipment as required.
    • Ensure that plots are executed and all equipment is setup according to the Sound Designer’s/ client’s vision and maintained throughout the run of a given production, presentation, event or rental.
    • May also include set up and running of other theatrical equipment, when required, including basic lighting and stage equipment.
  • Deck Crew/Rigging/Carpentry Focused Duties:

    • Assist in rigging and operating stage equipment on a counter-weight fly system including adding and removing weight from the gallery.
    • Assist the scenic, lighting, audio, prop, and costume departments as needed during load-in, rehearsals, performances, and strike.
    • Provide stage management duties during rehearsals and performances to create a safe, efficient, and organized backstage and show flow.
    • Perform basic carpentry and other repairs to scenic elements and stage equipment as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in technical theatre and a performing arts environment through professional or educational avenues.
  • Basic to advanced knowledge in at least one  area of theatre technology (lighting, audio/video, rigging/carpentry, or stage management).
  • Ability to work at heights on personnel lifts, ladders, and catwalks.
  • Ability to work independently in an efficient manner.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to crouch, twist, bend, stoop, climb stairs and ladders, stand and sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to manage time and work on multiple tasks in order to meet production requirements and deadlines.
  • Ability to calmly, effectively, and professionally communicate to resolve conflicts, ask informed questions, and relay information to others.
  • Ability to creatively solve problems and foster a collaborative environment.

Desirable Lighting Qualifications:

  • Experience and proficiency in programming ETC EOS family light boards.
  • Knowledge of lighting control systems, equipment and familiarity with lighting design techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical systems and load calculations.
  • Experience reading lighting plots and associated paperwork.
  • A working knowledge of DMX control and universes including but not limited to: LED and Moving Lights, scrollers, I-cue mirrors, gobo rotators and other effects.
  • Experience with Vectorworks and Lightwright.

Desirable Audio/Video Qualifications:

  • Experience in live audio mixing and associated concepts and workflow.
  • Familiarity with a Yamaha CL5 console, QLAB software, and audio networking.
  • Knowledge of projection and general AV techniques.
  • Experience in audio and video setup including interconnection and networking between all components.
  • Experience reading a stage plot and translating it into a system design including microphones, speakers, and other audio equipment.
  • Experience operating and troubleshooting wireless microphones.
  • Experience setting up, focusing, and operating video projection equipment.
  • Experience setting up wired and wireless theatrical communication equipment.

Desirable Deck Crew/Rigging/Carpentry Qualifications:

  • Experience operating a counter-weight fly system.
  • Experience with theatrical stage rigging.
  • Experience as deck crew or other backstage personnel on a show run.
  • Experience with stage or event management.
  • Experience in woodworking techniques and familiarity with basic carpentry tools.

This position is classified as a part-time, limited hours position. Work hours are scheduled as needed and vary depending on theater schedules, facility user needs and requests and theater maintenance needs.

Salary : $20 - $24
