This is a responsible level of semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of trucks and related equipment.
Work involves responsibility for hauling a wide variety of construction materials, equipment and/or personnel. As assigned, a variety of units may be operated. The class of Truck Driver is distinguished from that of Laborer in that driving is a primary assignment of employees of this class, although other manual labor may be performed. Work includes cleaning and performing minor repairs to assigned equipment. Varied driving assignments are received from a superior. After instructions are received, work may be performed without direct supervision. Supervision may be exercised over laborers and maintenance employees. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed while in progress or upon completion.

Works independently or as a member of a street maintenance and repair crew performing various tasks such as serving as a lead worker in the absence of a Crew Leader; operating a dump truck hauling various construction materials, transporting workers and tools, and/or towing various construction tools and trailers; performing adjustment, minor maintenance, and repair of hand equipment and powered hand equipment.
Works independently or as a member of a sewer maintenance and repair crew performing various tasks such as serving as a lead worker in the absence of a Crew Leader; operating a dump truck hauling various construction materials, transporting workers and tools, and/or hauling various construction tools and trailers to and from work sites; performs adjustments, minor maintenance and repair of hand equipment and powered hand equipment.
Performs all duties listed in the general duties of Laborer, Public Service Department, Street and Sewer Division.
Performs related work as required.
Completion of ten grades of school and the ability to read and understand both oral and written complex instructions; some experience in truck driving including general labor work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of trucks and related equipment.
Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances, and rules and regulations.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and the applicable safety rules and regulations of equipment operation.
Knowledge of the City street and house numbering system.
Ability to detect needed repair and maintenance.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, City officials, and the general public.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Skill in the operation of trucks, manual and power maintenance tools, and other assigned equipment.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Possession and maintenance of a valid Illinois Class B Commercial Drivers License.
